I am Frank Zhang, founder of LocalKey. I am based in Suzhou, and I work with travelers planning private journeys across China.
The LocalKey Classic tier is the rail-led option within Private China Tours. It is designed around high-speed rail between cities, private services at agreed points, selected guide days, and more independent movement between those services.
That means LocalKey arranges the agreed flights, hotels, trains, transfers, and activities. You receive an app roadbook to guide the independent parts of the journey, plus live 7×24 WeChat or WhatsApp support. You are not expected to self-book every train and hotel, and Classic is not a fixed coach group tour.
It is also not a private guide attached to every hour of every day. That higher level of car and guide coverage belongs to the Signature tier. Classic is for travelers who want a structured private trip with room to walk, use the metro, take a short taxi, and experience city movement at their own pace.
What “rail-led” means in practice
On a Classic itinerary, high-speed rail is the default long-distance connection between major destinations where the network is practical. A typical movement pattern may include:
- A private airport or hotel transfer at the beginning of a city stay.
- A planned high-speed train journey to the next destination.
- A private station transfer or meeting service at the other end.
- A guide day for a major museum, temple, historic complex, or cultural area.
- Independent time between those booked services, supported by the roadbook and LocalKey team.
Rail is therefore part of the operating structure, not a separate travel project you must organize alone. LocalKey confirms suitable train times, coordinates the surrounding transfers, and places the details in your written proposal and app roadbook.
The exact balance depends on your route, hotels, arrival times, luggage, mobility, and preferred pace. Some journeys use private transfers more frequently; others make greater use of walking, metro, or short taxi rides within a city. The point of Classic is planned independence, not uncertainty.
What Classic includes day to day
The following table explains the usual treatment of the main moving parts. Your final arrangements are confirmed in a written proposal after we understand your route and preferences.
| Element | Classic treatment |
|---|---|
| Rail | High-speed rail is normally the default for long-distance movement between suitable cities. LocalKey arranges agreed tickets and connects the train journey with the surrounding services. |
| Hotels | Hotels are selected and booked as agreed, with choices based on location, comfort, access, and your requested level. |
| Guide days | Licensed guides are included on selected days, such as major cultural sites or complex historical areas where interpretation and navigation add value. |
| Roadbook | The LocalKey app provides timings, addresses, meeting points, transport notes, tickets, and practical instructions for independent segments. |
| Support | 7×24 WeChat or WhatsApp support remains available throughout the journey for questions, changes, and practical help. |
Classic is still a private travel format. Your itinerary is built for your party, your dates, and your agreed services. The independent windows simply mean that a guide and vehicle do not accompany you continuously.
Bookings, the app roadbook, and live support
A rail-led trip works best when the moving parts are coordinated. LocalKey books the flights, hotels, trains, transfers, and other agreed services. We confirm the sequence with you before travel and provide the details in a written proposal.
The app roadbook then becomes your day-to-day reference. Depending on the segment, it may show:
- Where to meet a driver or guide.
- Which station entrance or hotel lobby to use.
- Train departure and arrival information.
- How much time to allow for station procedures.
- Suggested walking, metro, or short taxi connections.
- Contact details and notes for the next service.
- Any tickets, reservations, or timing reminders relevant to that day.
This is not intended to turn you into a train-booking administrator. The arrangements are made with you in advance. The roadbook gives you clarity when you are moving independently, particularly between a hotel, station, restaurant, museum, or meeting point.
If a question arises during the trip, support remains live through WeChat or WhatsApp. A delayed train, a confusing station exit, or a change in energy can be discussed with the LocalKey team rather than solved in isolation.
Selected guide days, not full-day guide density
Classic uses guide time where it has the greatest practical and cultural value. This may be a full day at a major palace and museum complex, a guided visit to a historic garden district, or a carefully planned day around a significant temple or heritage area.
On other days, you may have breakfast at your hotel, travel by metro or on foot, visit a smaller site, or spend time in a neighborhood without a guide beside you. Those sections are planned, but they are intentionally less accompanied.
This distinction matters. Some travelers enjoy having context from a licensed guide at key sites, then prefer to explore at their own speed afterward. Others want a driver, guide, and private vehicle available for most of the day, especially when the route is tiring or logistics are complicated.
If you prefer the second pattern, review the Signature option. Signature generally provides more private car and guide coverage, higher hotel choices, and a slower pace. Classic remains the better fit when you want rail-led movement and more independent windows.
Classic and Signature movement
| Dimension | Classic | Signature |
|---|---|---|
| Long-distance travel | High-speed rail is the normal movement choice where practical. | Rail may still be used, but the overall plan allows more time and private support around each connection. |
| City transport | A planned mix of walking, metro, short taxi rides, and private services. | More frequent private vehicle use, often with door-to-door support. |
| Guide coverage | Selected guide days focused on important sites and complex areas. | More guide coverage across the itinerary, with fewer unaccompanied periods. |
| Hotel approach | Comfortable, well-located hotels selected around the route and agreed preferences. | Higher hotel level is generally prioritized where available and appropriate. |
| Pace | More efficient and active, with greater independence between services. | Slower and more supported, with extra time for comfort and transitions. |
| Best for | Travelers comfortable with stations and short independent movements. | Travelers seeking maximum support, easier transitions, and more protection from fatigue. |
Neither tier is a group tour. The difference is how much private support is placed around the movement of your own party.
Who Classic fits
Classic often suits travelers who:
- Enjoy high-speed rail and want to see more than one city without arranging the network themselves.
- Are comfortable walking through stations and using a metro or short taxi when the roadbook gives clear instructions.
- Want private planning and support but do not need a guide and vehicle every day.
- Prefer a more active itinerary with independent time between planned services.
- Value selected cultural interpretation rather than continuous accompaniment.
Signature may be the better choice when:
- Jet lag makes frequent transitions difficult.
- Grandparents, young children, or travelers with limited mobility would benefit from fewer stairs and less station walking.
- You prefer door-to-door private car days.
- You want a guide available for most of the itinerary.
- A slower rhythm and higher hotel level matter more than covering several destinations.
| Profile | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rail-comfortable travelers who enjoy planned independence | Classic | The itinerary uses high-speed rail and gives you clear, supported independent windows. |
| Travelers wanting a guide only for major sites | Classic | Guide days are selected around places where interpretation and navigation are especially useful. |
| Families or older travelers concerned about stairs and transitions | Signature | More private car and guide coverage can reduce walking, transfers, and decision-making. |
| Travelers recovering from long-haul travel or managing a slower pace | Signature | Additional support and fewer demanding transitions can make the itinerary easier. |
| Travelers who want an active private route with time to explore alone | Classic | The structure leaves room for your own movement without making you responsible for the entire booking process. |
For families, the China Family Tours collection may also be useful when school schedules, room arrangements, and different energy levels need to shape the route.
What to include in your enquiry
To assess whether Classic is suitable, send as much of the following as you already know:
- Your approximate travel dates and trip length.
- Arrival and departure cities.
- The cities or regions you are considering.
- Number of travelers and ages of any children.
- Preferred hotel level and room requirements.
- Mobility concerns, luggage needs, or aversion to stairs.
- Whether you enjoy high-speed rail and independent city movement.
- The sites or experiences that matter most to you.
- Whether you are comparing Classic with Signature.
You do not need to design the train sequence before contacting us. We can recommend a practical route, explain where rail-led movement works well, and identify where more private car or guide coverage would improve the trip.
Quotes follow the hotels, trains, route, and pace needs described in the written proposal. There is no useful single price for every Classic journey because those choices materially change the operation of the trip.
Practical FAQ
Is a Classic private China tour a group tour?
No. Classic is a private itinerary for your own party. You may have independent periods, but you are not placed on a fixed coach schedule or shared group program.
Do I book my own high-speed train tickets?
No, not as a normal part of the service. LocalKey arranges the agreed train bookings and connects them with the relevant hotel, station, guide, and transfer details. The app roadbook helps you follow the journey.
Will a guide be with us every day?
No. Classic includes selected guide days rather than continuous guide coverage. The chosen days depend on the route and the sites where a licensed guide is most useful.
How independent is the movement?
You may walk, use the metro, or take a short taxi between booked services. These segments are planned and explained in the roadbook, with 7×24 WeChat or WhatsApp support available. Classic is structured independence, not a DIY booking guide.
Should we choose Signature instead?
Consider Signature if you prefer more private car and guide coverage, a slower pace, higher hotel choices, or easier door-to-door movement. If you are comfortable with rail and planned independent windows, Classic may be the more natural fit.
Can the route include flights as well as rail?
Yes. Flights can be included where they make sense for your route, dates, or regional connections. LocalKey can coordinate flights, high-speed rail, hotels, transfers, and guide days as part of the agreed proposal.
To choose Classic or Signature, enquire with a LocalKey 1:1 specialist. We will discuss your dates, route, mobility, hotel preferences, and preferred level of support, with 7×24 WeChat or WhatsApp assistance available throughout the journey.
