Can a US passport holder use this 10-day first-timer itinerary on 240-hour transit?
Yes. Ordinary US passports are on the 57-country 240-hour list. They are not on the 50-country 30-day unilateral waiver. This sample stays inside the 24 stay areas named on the 240-hour visa-free China guide: Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Huangshan in Anhui. Anhui is a whole-province stay area on that page. Print a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region. Hong Kong and Macao usually count. A return to the city you left does not.
The clock is not ten nights from the moment you land. Land at 14:30 on a Monday and the ten days run from 00:00 on Tuesday. Day 9 on this table exists so a delayed train does not eat that onward flight.
Read the stay-area list before you buy a train. A 12306 seat does not make an off-list city legal. Tibet, Xinjiang, and any city off the permitted list are out. Do not add Chengdu as a fourth city on a first visit. You will lose the stay-put days.
Is this a 10-day China group tour?

Should a first visit start in Shanghai or fly on to Beijing?
Shanghai. For a first landing it is the calmer port: two airports, English signage by China standards, and short high-speed hops to Suzhou and Hangzhou. The Shanghai destination page is the city brief. Use it for neighborhoods. This page is the ten-day walk.
Beijing is a different first day. Imperial scale, a Wall day, a different station. It belongs on a visa stamp, or on the 30-day waiver if you hold it, or on 240-hour transit if you already know you want north and you accept that the trains will eat the stay-put days. Can I add Nanjing or Huangshan on 240-hour transit?
Yes, if you stay on the map. The 240-hour visa-free China guide names Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Beijing, and Xi'an inside the 24 areas. It names Anhui as a whole-province stay area, so Huangshan can replace Nanjing if you want stairs and weather more than a city wall. Shanxi, Jiangxi, and Guangxi are city-limited. Tibet, Xinjiang, and any city off the permitted list are out.
Nanjing is the extra I give people who want a museum morning and a wall at a quiet hour. Huangshan is the extra I give people who accept an early start and a weather day. Do not do both. Ten days is not a contest.
Cross-province travel inside those 24 areas is allowed. That is why Shanghai to Suzhou to Hangzhou to Nanjing is a legal 240-hour walk. It is not permission to "do China."
How do I buy the high-speed trains for this itinerary?
Buy the intercity legs on official 12306, with the same passport you will carry to the gate. Foreigners can register on the English site. Identity verification can take days. Do it before the 15-day sales window opens for a busy date. Station names matter: Shanghai Hongqiao is not Shanghai Station; Suzhou North is not Suzhou. Hangzhou East is not Hangzhou Station. This page will not invent a 2026 fare, a train number, or a taxi minute count. Check today's trains on 12306. The English homepage states ticket sales from 05:00 to 01:00 the next day (05:00 to 23:30 on Tuesday). Arrive with time. The counter, the entrance, the gate, and the platform sit a walk apart.
Set up Alipay for foreigners 2026 a week before you fly. Alipay first. WeChat Pay often needs one to three business days after the passport check. Street stalls and metro gates take a QR, not a chip card. Do not start this on airport Wi-Fi.
The east sample, day by day
This table is a sample you bend, not a departure you join. Swap Hangzhou for a second Suzhou day if you want less moving. Swap Nanjing for Huangshan if the weather holds. Keep Day 9 as a buffer if you are on the 240-hour clock.

Days 1 to 2: land, then one neighborhood
Day 1 is not a sightseeing day. Pudong (PVG) or Hongqiao (SHA), data, Alipay, hotel, sleep. If you land with enough light, one evening walk is enough. If you land after 22:00, skip the walk. I would rather you remember the second morning than a blur of river lights.
Day 2 is one neighborhood, on foot. Former French Concession lanes, or a quieter stretch along the creek, or a tea house you actually sit in. Not the Bund, Yu Garden, and an observation deck as a morning checklist. Shanghai rewards people who stay in one pocket. The destination page above is the neighborhood map. This day is the practice day for the metro QR and the shop scan.
Days 3 to 4: Suzhou, then stay put
Suzhou is the short hop I send first-timers on because the city still uses its gardens. Take the morning train. One garden. Then the lanes around it. Do not collect five gardens in a day. I live here. The version you came for is the Tuesday morning, not the tour-bus noon.
Day 4 is the stay-put day. A canal morning. A silk workshop if you care about cloth. A second cup. The point of ten days is that you are allowed to stop. If you only have energy for one garden city, you can skip Hangzhou and give Suzhou the extra night. That is still this itinerary.
Days 5 to 6: Hangzhou, tea hills and the lake
Hangzhou is worth the train because you can sit down. West Lake at an hour when the path is not a queue. Longjing hills in the morning: walk, taste, sit. One village tea house and one pot, not ten famous teas. Keep the lake or the hills as the deep day. Do not race both as a checklist because the next train exists.
If rain takes the hills, sit by the water and move the hills to the next morning. Weather is not a failure. A packed group treats it as one.
Days 7 to 10: stay east, or go north only on purpose
The first-timer default is to stay east. Nanjing is a wall, a museum, or one street — not all three as a race. Huangshan is stairs and cloud. Pick one extra. Then come back toward Shanghai with a day in hand.
Day 9 exists so a delayed train does not eat the onward flight. Do not book a tight domestic hop on the last morning. If you are on 240-hour transit, leave for the third country or region inside the window. If you are on a visa or the 30-day waiver, you still want the buffer. Tired people miss trains.
The other fork is north: Beijing and Xi'an, then Shanghai. Those cities sit inside the 24 stay areas, so 240-hour transit can legally do it. I still do not give that arc to a first-timer who landed in Shanghai and wanted gardens. The high-speed legs eat half-days. You will skip more than you see. Use that fork only if the visa path is the plan — a visa, or the 30-day waiver if you hold it — or if you already know you want north and you have read the two-route sample on 10-Day China Itinerary 2026: 240-Hour Route, Not a Group Tour. Do not add Chengdu, Tibet, or Xinjiang to "get more China" on this clock.
