The Bund
Best at blue hour, not midday. Walk east to west along the river and give the Pudong skyline the angle it deserves before the tourist boats fill in.

Why Shanghai
3-4 days is the practical minimum. A fifth day earns Suzhou as a day trip or overnight.
Shanghai is China's most accessible major city for international travelers. International infrastructure, English signage, and fast rail connections to Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing make it a practical entry point — and a city that rewards multiple days once you stop trying to fit everything into one afternoon.
The city divides across distinct neighborhoods: the Bund's colonial waterfront, the French Concession's plane-tree cafes and boutiques, and Pudong's vertical skyline. Each is worth its own half-day. The mistake is treating all three as items on the same morning checklist.
Best at blue hour, not midday. Walk east to west along the river and give the Pudong skyline the angle it deserves before the tourist boats fill in.
Plane trees, art deco buildings, Shanghai-style cafes, and the most walkable neighborhood in the city. Plan a slow morning here rather than a destination stop.
Intricate Ming-era garden architecture in the old city. Go early and limit it to one hour — the surrounding bazaar will consume the rest of the day if you let it.
A small arts and craft labyrinth in French Concession lane housing. Compact and walkable — significantly better before 11 AM than after noon.
Former textile factory turned contemporary art space. Less tourist-facing than Tianzifang, better for travelers with genuine interest in current Chinese visual culture.
The post-industrial waterway north of the city is developing fast. Worth a half-morning walk if you want Shanghai texture without the shopping crowd.
Where to stay
Boutique hotels, international restaurants, and the best concentration of independent cafes in the city. Best for travelers who want walkability and neighborhood energy.
Luxury hotels with river access. Higher price point, strong evening position, and easy Bund walking distance.
Modern hotel district with metro access and proximity to both the French Concession and People's Square. Clean and convenient without the Bund premium.
When to visit
March-May and October-November for easier walking, clearer air, and more comfortable days.
Payment
Very high. Alipay and WeChat Pay are normal for coffee, taxis, metro flows, shops, and restaurants. Keep one card and RMB cash as backup.

First-time tips
Make Day 1 boring on purpose: data, Alipay, hotel, one Bund or Xuhui walk.
Use Shanghai to practice high-speed rail before you attempt a bigger route.
Stay central. Saving money far outside the core usually costs more in friction.

FAQ
Usually, yes. Shanghai has two major airports, the clearest international hotel setup, strong English signage by China standards, and fast rail links to Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing.

Source: cf_payment source_urlPVG handles more long-haul flights. SHA is closer to central Shanghai and directly useful if you plan to continue by rail from Hongqiao.
Source: cf_cities source_urlYes. Fast trains from Shanghai Hongqiao to Suzhou are short enough for a day trip, but an overnight stay gives Suzhou the slower morning it deserves.
