Forbidden City
The imperial palace complex is genuinely vast. Budget three hours, enter through the Meridian Gate with a timed ticket, and move north through the main ceremonial axis.

Big-capital energy: history, hutongs, scale, and routes that need breathing room.

Why Beijing
4-5 days is the practical minimum. Five days protects one Great Wall day, one hutong half-day, two city-core days, and an arrival buffer.
Beijing is China's political and cultural capital — and the city that most rewards travelers who slow down. The Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, and Great Wall are all within reach, but the real Beijing lives in its hutong neighborhoods: grey-brick alley networks where courtyard culture still holds its shape.
The city is large and the distances punish overpacked maps. Four days minimum; five is better if you want breathing room for the hutong mornings that do not photograph well in a rush.
The imperial palace complex is genuinely vast. Budget three hours, enter through the Meridian Gate with a timed ticket, and move north through the main ceremonial axis.
The practical default: restored, visually strong, and far enough from the city to feel like a different world. A full half-day, not a morning add-on. Private car is worth the cost.
Early mornings here deliver the Beijing that most visitors miss — locals practicing tai chi, group ballroom dancing, and ordinary park life in a space built for imperial ritual.
A lake, a hill, a long painted corridor, and a way to understand how emperors planned a summer away from the Forbidden City. Allow half a day and do not rush the long bridge.
Dongcheng and Xicheng's alley networks reward walking without a fixed destination. Nanluoguxiang is accessible; Shijia Hutong is quieter. A good guide earns their day rate here.
China's contemporary art center occupies former East German-designed factory buildings in the north of the city. Worth an afternoon if current visual culture is part of the reason you came.
Where to stay
Central, close to the Forbidden City and Nanluoguxiang. Best for travelers who want cultural proximity and walking access to the historic core.
Modern hotel and dining district in Chaoyang. Better food options, easier payment, and a less austere atmosphere than the historic center.
Hutong-adjacent with lake views and evening bar culture. Higher noise on weekends; quieter weekday mornings can be excellent for slow breakfast walks.
When to visit
April-May and September-October for walking weather and stronger outdoor days.
Payment
High in central districts and tourist zones. Mobile payment is standard; attraction booking may still need passport-aware planning.

FAQ
Five days is a strong first visit: one arrival day, one Great Wall day, two city-core days, and one buffer day for distance, ticketing, or weather.
