Huangshan Maofeng 2026: Sit for the Cup, Don't Book a Tea Tour

The short version

How an independent traveler sits for Huangshan Maofeng: one downy-peak green cup from Anhui — not a Huangshan tea-tour stop.

Yes. Huangshan Maofeng (黄山毛峰) is a sit-down green cup in Huangshan, Anhui: one downy-peak leaf from gardens in Huangshan City. It is not a tasting walk, not a ranked house list, and not Hangzhou Longjing under another English name. I am Frank Zhang. I live in Suzhou. This page is how an independent traveler sits for Huangshan Maofeng in 2026 — Self-Guided or Tailor-Made — without buying a tea coach.

The search "Huangshan tea tour" is usually a van. The cup people actually sit for is one pot of this Anhui green. The State Council notice on the second-batch national intangible-heritage list records item 931, VIII-148: green-tea making craft, and names Huangshan Maofeng among the listed teas. Declaring units on that row include Huangshan City's Huizhou District and Huangshan District. Dated 7 June 2008 as State Council document No. 19. That is a national craft lock. It is not a shop ranking.

China's IP office then keeps the same leaf as a geographic-indication product. The CNIPA Huangshan Maofeng Tea sheet records a green tea from Huangshan City, Anhui, made from local cultivars by a named path: spread the fresh leaf, kill-green, shape, first drying, cool, then dry with sufficient fire. Quality line on that sheet: strong buds, lasting fragrance, fresh refreshing taste with a sweet finish, and it takes more than one steep. Naming and a product file. Not a booking URL.

You sit. You drink one cup. You do not need a coach that sells "Maofeng" as stop three on a Huangshan walk.

Anhui green-tea craft, not a tea-tour SKU

Huangshan Maofeng sits inside a named Anhui green-tea making craft, not a souvenir aisle. The State Council 2008 second-batch list places it under green-tea making craft, item 931, VIII-148, next to other named greens. The Anhui declaring units on that row are Huizhou District and Huangshan District of Huangshan City. Naming a declaring unit is not a booking URL. Hangzhou and Jinhua sit on the same numbered row for different named greens. Same craft category. Different city. Different cup.

The CNIPA sheet is the living place lock. It defines Huangshan Maofeng Tea as a green tea produced in Huangshan City, Anhui, from tender shoots and leaves of local tea trees, by that unique process. The same sheet places the gardens on the low and middle mountains and hilly basins of the Huangshan range: warm, wet, cloudy, with yellow-brown, yellow-red, and yellow soils and a thick humus layer. Quality line again: strong buds, lasting fragrance, fresh refreshing taste, sweet finish, brewing resistance. That is craft and origin. It is not a farm ranking I will reprint.

The Chinese side of the same CNIPA sheet names the local cultivars: Huangshan, Zhuye, Dishuixiang, Mingzhou, and selected cultivars from those lines. It records picking around mid-March, then the making path already named in English: spread, kill-green, shape, first drying (mao huo), cool, sufficient fire (zu huo). Technique. Not a 2026 calendar I will invent, and not a house list.

I will not invent a 2026 cup price, a wait time, or a tea-house ranking. The 2008 making-craft listing and the CNIPA geographic-indication product sheet are the public locks I will keep.

A supermarket tin that only says "Maofeng" in English is a different object if it does not carry Huangshan, Anhui origin. The CNIPA lock is Huangshan City. If the English counter only shows a flat Hangzhou roast or a rolled oolong, you are not sitting for the Anhui cup this page is about.

What the official files lock

Official sources distinguish Huangshan Maofeng from a generic green sold under the same English name, and from Hangzhou Longjing. I will not invent a 2026 menu price, an opening hour, or a house ranking. The table follows the published State Council listing and the CNIPA product sheet — craft and origin only, not a house review.

On the table What the official lock says What you do
Cup State Council 2008 second batch, item 931, VIII-148: green-tea making craft; Huangshan Maofeng named among the listed teas; Huizhou District and Huangshan District among declaring units Sit. Order one pot or one cup. Drink it.
Place CNIPA GI sheet: Huangshan City, Anhui; gardens on low and middle mountains and hilly basins of the Huangshan range Confirm Anhui Huangshan origin on the day's tin or menu. This page does not invent a farm ranking.
Make CNIPA path: spread fresh leaf, kill-green, shape, first drying, cool, dry with sufficient fire Watch only if the maker invites you. Do not restage a wok or a dryer for a video.
Cup quality CNIPA: strong buds, lasting fragrance, fresh refreshing taste, sweet finish, brewing resistance Stay for a second steep.
Cultivars CNIPA: Huangshan, Zhuye, Dishuixiang, Mingzhou local lines and selected cultivars Confirm the day's leaf. I will not name a farm.
Season in the file CNIPA: picking around mid-March That is a product-file season, not a 2026 gate time I will invent.
Pay QR is the usual table Set up Alipay before you want a cup.

Sources for the table: State Council — second-batch national ICH list, item 931, VIII-148; State Council list body, same notice; CNIPA — Huangshan Maofeng Tea GI product sheet.

The files are a craft and origin rule, not a ranked tea-house list. Naming a declaring district on a national ICH list is not a booking URL. Pick one room that already pours Huangshan Maofeng. Sit.

How to sit without a tea tour

Walk in. If a table is empty, sit. A server will come, or you walk to the counter and point.

Say Huangshan Maofeng, or Maofeng, or Anhui green. Point at the downy, slightly shaped green leaf if the jars are unlabeled in English. Ask for one pot or one cup to start, not a tasting flight and not a ceremony. I will not invent English names for every grade, and I will not invent a 2026 cup price. Confirm on the day's menu. Do not count on English on the wall.

When the cup lands, drink it. Stay for a second steep. The CNIPA sheet says the leaf takes more than one pour. Photograph the leaf in the glass if the house allows it. Do not pose over a pan or a dryer you were not invited to stand beside.

If you buy a tin, look for Huangshan, Anhui origin. A supermarket rack can still say "Maofeng" in English without that origin. I will not name a shop.

Pay by QR. Set up Alipay for foreigners before you want a cup, not when the pot is on the table. Cash still appears at some older rooms. Do not count on it.

This is not Hangzhou Longjing. The State Council 2008 list puts both names under the same green-tea making-craft number. That is a category lock, not a permission to stack them as one tea tour. Longjing is a Hangzhou sit. This page is an Anhui green from Huangshan City, with a kill-green, shape, and sufficient-fire path on the CNIPA sheet. Different city. Different leaf. Do not paste a Longjing wok onto a Huangshan morning because a brochure used the word green twice.

This is not Suzhou Biluochun. Suzhou Biluochun 2026 is a downy green spiral from Taihu hills. Different province. Different shape. Do not stack them as one tea tour.

This is not Fujian Tieguanyin. Fujian Tieguanyin 2026 is a half-ferment oolong from Anxi. Huangshan Maofeng is unoxidized green. Tea versus tea.

This is not a Chaoshan pour. Chaoshan Gongfu tea 2026 is a small-cup oolong ritual in Guangdong. This page is one Anhui green cup. Different table. Different job.

This is not the mountain walk. Huangshan Yellow Mountain hiking and photography 2026 is granite, pine, and stone steps. This page is a cup. Same city name. Different sit. Do not treat a ridge day as a tea tour, and do not treat this cup as a sunrise package.

This is the opposite of a tea tour. A locked van with a lecture at every farm door is a group stop. LocalKey does not sell group tea tours. LocalKey does not sell tea coaches.

Is Huangshan Maofeng the same as a Huangshan tea tour?

No. Huangshan Maofeng is a sit-down: one Anhui green cup, a pot, time for a second steep. A tea tour is a locked walk with a hard sell at every door. The State Council 2008 list locks a green-tea making craft and names this tea. The CNIPA GI sheet locks a named product from Huangshan City. Pick one room. Sit.

How do foreigners order Huangshan Maofeng without speaking Chinese?

Walk in. Sit if a table is empty. Say Huangshan Maofeng or Maofeng. Point at the downy green leaf. One pot or one cup to start. Confirm the day's price on the menu; this page does not invent 2026 prices. Pay by QR. Set up Alipay for foreigners before you want a cup.

Do I need a Huangshan tea tour to drink Maofeng?

No. The cup is a table, not stop three on a mountain walk. Pick one room. Sit. LocalKey does not sell group tea tours. LocalKey does not sell tea coaches. Self-Guided or Tailor-Made can put a tea room in a Huangshan day you already chose. A van that tours the farms is not what we do.

Is this page a tea-house ranking?

No. It is a sit-down craft. The 2008 State Council list locks a making skill. The CNIPA GI sheet locks a geographic-indication product. This page does not name a house as the pick. I will not review a tea house. I will not name a farm as the pick.

Is Huangshan Maofeng the same as Hangzhou Longjing?

No. Hangzhou Longjing is a Hangzhou green. This page is an Anhui green from Huangshan City. The State Council list names both under one green-tea making-craft number. Sister category. Different city. Different cup. Order the Huangshan leaf, not the Hangzhou green, if that is the cup you came for.

Is Huangshan Maofeng the same as the Yellow Mountain hike?

No. Huangshan Yellow Mountain hiking and photography 2026 is the ridge: granite, pine, cloud, stone steps. This page is a cup. Same English place-name. Different sit. Walk the mountain if that is your day. Sit for Maofeng if that is your cup. Do not buy a tea tour because you already booked the steps.

Is every tin labeled Maofeng Huangshan GI leaf?

No. English "Maofeng" is used widely. Huangshan GI leaf is the product on the CNIPA Huangshan Maofeng Tea sheet: Huangshan City, Anhui, named cultivars, named making path. If you buy a tin, look for that origin. This page does not invent a shop.

Do I need a Chinese bank card to pay for a cup?

No. Pay by QR. Set up Alipay for foreigners before you want the cup, not after it lands. Cash still appears at some older rooms. This page does not invent a 2026 table price.

How this sits in a Self-Guided or Tailor-Made week

The cup does not need its own coach day. It can sit inside a Huangshan day you already chose — a quiet table that is not the ridge walk on Huangshan Yellow Mountain hiking and photography 2026. Keep this as a cup, not a third attraction stacked between a cableway ticket and a souvenir shop.

If Suzhou Biluochun is also on the week, that sit is on Suzhou Biluochun 2026. If Fujian Tieguanyin is on the week, that sit is on Fujian Tieguanyin 2026. If a Chaoshan oolong pour is on the week, that sit is on Chaoshan Gongfu tea 2026. Different rooms. Different days if you can.

Two lanes only. Self-Guided: we book the hotels and trains, you get an app roadbook and a WhatsApp or WeChat thread. You move yourself. Tailor-Made: the same plan, plus a private car and an optional private guide on the days you want one. A car to a Huangshan tea room on a tired afternoon is useful. A van that tours tea farms is not what we do.

This is the opposite of a group tea tour: no locked departure, no lecture at every tin. Stay here for a sit-down you can actually keep.

One sit is enough. Do not collect houses. Do not treat a national ICH number as a punch card.

If you want the cup booked, not a tea tour

LocalKey books customized independent travel. We do not sell group tours. We do not sell Huangshan tea coaches. We do not run tea tours.
