A private China tour should give you control without leaving every decision to you. Your dates, route, pace, hotels, transport, guide time, and support are considered together before you travel.
At LocalKey, that means one private trip planned around your circumstances, not a seat on a coach with strangers. You choose between two budget levels: Classic, which is rail-led with guide time where it matters, and Signature, which adds more private car days, more guide coverage, a slower pace, and higher hotels.
I am Frank Zhang, founder of LocalKey Travel. I live in Suzhou, and I work with travellers who want a clear plan for China without being placed into a fixed group departure. This guide explains how our Private China Tours work, what changes between Classic and Signature, and how to send an enquiry that gives a specialist something useful to design.
What “private” means here, and what it does not
A private China tour is built for your travelling party. That might mean a couple, a family, or a small group of friends. The route can reflect your available dates, interests, energy, food requirements, mobility needs, work commitments, and preferred balance between guided visits and independent movement.
It also means the practical parts are coordinated together: hotels, trains, private transfers, guides, drivers, major tickets, restaurant planning, daily travel documents, and on-ground support. The exact services depend on your confirmed proposal.
Private does not mean every minute has to be escorted. It does not mean improvising hotel rooms and train tickets after arrival. It does not mean buying a generic itinerary and being left to interpret the details yourself.
Your dates, your pace — no locked coach departure
There is no locked coach departure and no shared itinerary with strangers. Your trip begins with the dates you have available, then develops around the places that make sense for your time.
That could mean a compact first visit, a slower route for older travellers, or more independent movement between cities. It could mean adding rest after a long international flight, reducing early starts, or keeping one day flexible for weather and energy.
The phrase “private” is useful only if it describes the whole trip. A private vehicle for one transfer does not make a group itinerary private. At LocalKey, the aim is to coordinate the route and its services for your party from the beginning.
Not a free planning tool dump
You can find hotel lists, railway instructions, ticketing apps, restaurant suggestions, and map pins online. The difficult part is making those pieces work together across several cities, different booking windows, changing opening times, luggage, transfers, and the pace of the people travelling.
LocalKey provides a specialist planning process rather than a folder of links. We help shape the route, confirm practical services, coordinate bookings, and keep the support line open while you travel. The purpose is not to remove your choices. It is to make those choices easier to use.
Classic or Signature — same private tour, different budget
Classic and Signature are two ways to resource the same kind of private trip. Both are planned 1:1, both include booking coordination and an app roadbook, and both come with 7×24 WeChat or WhatsApp support.
The difference is mainly how you move, how much guide coverage you want, the pace of the route, and the hotel level. See the Classic option and Signature option for the product details and enquiry route.
| Feature | Classic | Signature |
|---|---|---|
| Trip format | Private trip for your party | Private trip for your party |

| Guide time | Used where it matters most | More guide coverage across the route |

| Support | 1:1 design, roadbook, 7×24 WeChat or WhatsApp | 1:1 design, roadbook, 7×24 WeChat or WhatsApp |
Classic: rail-led days, guide time where it matters
Classic is a good fit when you want a private itinerary but are comfortable moving between major cities by high-speed rail. Rail can make a multi-city route efficient, and it gives you more independent movement during some travel days.
Guide time is focused on the places where local explanation, navigation, or timing makes the day work better. You may have guided visits in one city, then a more independent rail journey or free period in another. Private transfers and other services are arranged around the confirmed route.
This is not a lower-quality version of the trip. It is a different balance of services and budget. A Classic private China tour can suit travellers who like some structure, want support nearby, and still prefer room to move at their own pace.
Signature: more private car days, more guide coverage, slower pace
Signature is designed for travellers who want more of the practical movement handled privately. It adds more private car days, more guide coverage, a slower pace, and higher hotels.
That can be useful when a group includes older parents, younger children, mobility considerations, or simply a preference for shorter transitions and more assistance. It can also suit first-time visitors who would rather spend less time managing transport between stops.
Signature does not mean every moment is guided or that every day has the same structure. The proposal still follows your dates, interests, and constraints. It means the trip is resourced with more private support where that improves the experience.
As a product sample, the private-car version of the five-day Signature soft-landing route covering Shanghai and Suzhou is shown from $1,800 per person. That figure belongs to that sample only; final cost follows the hotels and confirmed services.
Good fit and not the best fit
Private China tours are usually a good fit if you:
- Have specific dates or a limited travel window.
- Want a route shaped around your party rather than a standard departure.
- Need help balancing cities, rail travel, private transfers, and rest.
- Are travelling with children, parents, food requirements, work constraints, or mobility considerations.
- Want hotel and restaurant planning handled with the wider itinerary in mind.
- Prefer a specialist to coordinate the details while keeping your choices clear.
- Want support available throughout the trip on WeChat or WhatsApp.
This may not be the best fit if your only priority is the lowest possible do-it-yourself price. It may also be unsuitable if you want a fixed group coach departure, a standard package with no discussion, or a trip where every traveller follows someone else’s dates.
A private service has a planning cost because someone is reviewing the route, checking the connections, coordinating suppliers, and remaining available when plans need attention. If you only need general destination ideas, a free planning resource may be enough. If you need a workable trip for real people on real dates, specialist design becomes more useful.
How a private trip is planned
Inquiry → specialist consultation → custom design → booking + support
The process has four stages.
1. Inquiry
Send your likely dates, party size, arrival and departure cities if known, destinations you are considering, and any non-negotiable constraints. Tell us whether you are leaning toward Classic or Signature, or say that you need help comparing them.
2. Specialist consultation
A specialist reviews what you have sent and asks the questions that affect the route: how quickly you want to travel, how much guided time you prefer, whether rail is comfortable for your party, and what level of hotel and private transport makes sense.
3. Custom design
We shape a proposed route around those answers. The plan may include private guides, drivers, rail tickets, domestic flights, transfers, hotels, major tickets, restaurant planning, and daily travel information. Services are confirmed in writing before booking.
4. Booking and support
Once the proposal is agreed, LocalKey coordinates the confirmed bookings and prepares the roadbook. Support continues during the journey through 7×24 WeChat or WhatsApp.
The proposal is not a promise that every supplier or special access request can be arranged. Unconfirmed supplier-only access or special permits are not included until written confirmation is provided.
What stays in both levels
Classic and Signature both include the core working relationship:
- 1:1 specialist design.
- Route planning around your dates and constraints.
- Hotel shortlist and booking coordination.
- Coordination of confirmed private guides, drivers, trains, domestic flights, transfers, and major tickets where included.
- Restaurant planning where useful to the route.
- An app roadbook with daily travel information.
- On-ground support during the journey.
- 7×24 support through WeChat or WhatsApp.
The confirmed proposal is the source of truth for your individual trip. International flights to and from China, travel insurance, personal documents, personal spending, shopping, optional upgrades, meals outside the confirmed plan, and unconfirmed supplier access are not normally included.
Family travellers: the same product, different pacing
Families use the same Private China Tours product, but the route may need a different rhythm. Younger children may need shorter sightseeing blocks and predictable breaks. Teenagers may want more choice and independent time. Parents or grandparents may prefer fewer hotel changes, private transfers, and a slower morning.
That is why family planning starts with the people travelling rather than a fixed list of attractions. Classic can work for families who are comfortable with rail-led movement and selected guide days. Signature can suit families who want more private car support, more guide coverage, and fewer demanding transitions.
For the family-specific planning approach, continue to China Family Tours. It is the same private-tour product with family pacing considered from the start.
Sample shapes
These are starting points, not fixed packages. The final route depends on your dates, arrival plans, hotel preferences, and the way your party wants to travel.
Soft landing — Shanghai and Suzhou, 5 days
A short first trip can combine a major arrival city with nearby Suzhou, giving you time to settle in before moving between several distant destinations. The Signature private-car version of this sample is shown from $1,800 per person. Ask for the current proposal and confirmed inclusions.
First time — Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai, about 9 days
A first-time route can connect three major stops with high-speed rail or other confirmed transport, while reserving guide time for key visits and leaving space for meals, rest, and independent movement. The final number of nights and order of cities should follow your flight dates and pace.

It is one trip built around your dates and constraints. You choose Classic or Signature, which sets the balance of hotels, movement, and guide coverage. A specialist designs it 1:1 before you travel, and support stays with you 7×24 on WeChat or WhatsApp. It is not a group departure.
What is the difference between Classic and Signature?
Both include 1:1 design, booking coordination, an app roadbook, and 7×24 support. Classic is rail-led with guide time where it matters. Signature adds more private car days, more guide coverage, a slower pace, and higher hotels.
Is this a fixed package or group tour?
No. There is no locked coach departure and no shared itinerary with strangers. The route is planned for your party; Classic or Signature changes how the private trip is resourced.
