We suggest giving Beijing five days on a first trip, four at minimum: two for the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and hutongs, one full day for the Great Wall at Mutianyu, one for the Summer Palace, and one spare; book the Forbidden City in advance with your passport, because it sells no tickets on the day of your visit and is closed on Mondays, except Mondays that are national holidays (other than Chinese New Year's Eve).
How many days do you need in Beijing?
We suggest five days for a first trip to Beijing, and four at minimum. With a sixth or seventh day, we suggest simply slowing the pace or adding a second visit to the sight you liked most.
The split we usually plan is two days for the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and hutongs, one full day for the Great Wall, one for the Summer Palace, and one spare day for bookings, rest or a change of plan. We suggest pairing sights that sit close together rather than crossing the city twice in a day. On the central days, we usually put the Forbidden City in the morning and add a short Jingshan Park walk or a hutong stroll afterwards, and give the Temple of Heaven a half-day of its own. We suggest keeping the Summer Palace as a separate day, so the palace area, Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake can be taken at an easy pace, and leaving the Great Wall day free of other sights.
Beijing Municipality is one of the 24 permitted provincial-level areas for 240-hour visa-free transit, as are Tianjin and Hebei, so eligible travellers (nationals of 57 countries flying on to a third country or region) can include Beijing in an up-to-10-day stay. What should you book before you arrive in Beijing?
The Forbidden City sells no tickets on the day of your visit, so book online in advance; foreign visitors must give their passport number when booking, and daily visitors are capped at 40,000. The Mutianyu Great Wall also uses real-name booking, with foreign visitors booking on a passport up to 15 days ahead.

We suggest fixing the Forbidden City and Mutianyu dates first, because the Forbidden City is capped at 40,000 visitors a day and Mutianyu opens bookings up to 15 days ahead. Designated-spot Temple of Heaven tickets and Summer Palace tickets can be booked 1–7 days ahead on their official WeChat accounts, so we suggest reserving them once your dates are settled, and saving each booking confirmation on your phone, with your booking passport in hand at every gate. For late-autumn and winter trips, note that from 1 November the Palace Museum closes at 16:30 with last entry at 15:30 and the Summer Palace moves to its off-season hours, so we suggest putting the Forbidden City first thing in the morning. Because the museum may close irregularly, we suggest rechecking its official visit page a day or two before you go.
Which Great Wall section should you choose from Beijing?
The Great Wall has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and we suggest Mutianyu as the default section for a first visit. Mutianyu uses real-name booking, offers a cable car, chairlift and toboggan, and daytime visits cover watchtowers 1 to 20.
If you prefer a section with on-site tickets and no reservation, we suggest Badaling as the alternative. It is in Yanqing District, 60 km northwest of Beijing, and tickets are sold on site.
If you are weighing Mutianyu against Badaling because of timing, we suggest deciding by how far ahead you can plan: Mutianyu needs a passport booking up to 15 days ahead, while Badaling tickets are sold on site with no reservation required.

On the Great Wall day, the two LocalKey options described below change who carries the logistics. On Independent, we suggest asking your specialist to set the Mutianyu date and to add the optional private car and driver for this day if the journey out of the city worries you. On Private Guided, your guide and car are already with you, so we suggest simply choosing between the cable car, chairlift and toboggan on the day.
Where should you stay in Beijing?
We suggest one of three bases: Dongcheng or Xicheng, Chaoyang, or the hutong lanes around Houhai. The right one depends on whether you want to walk out into old Beijing each morning or come back to a modern hotel each night.
- Dongcheng or Xicheng: we suggest these central districts if you want the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and the hutongs close by, and plan to start most days on foot or with a short ride.
- Chaoyang: we suggest it if you prefer contemporary hotels and a wide choice of restaurants for the evening.
- Houhai: we suggest the hutongs by the lake if you like an evening walk by the water, and we suggest a room away from the busiest lanes.
Whichever base you choose, we suggest a hotel from which you can reach the Forbidden City easily on your booked morning, since a fixed-date ticket leaves little room for a late start. For a city-level overview, see the Beijing destination page.
How should you pace a first trip to Beijing?
The Forbidden City is closed on Mondays (it opens on Mondays that are national holidays, except Chinese New Year's Eve), and the Temple of Heaven's separately ticketed attractions (the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest, the Echo Wall and the Circular Mound Altar) close on Mondays except statutory holidays. We suggest building the trip around those closures, with one or two sights per day and a lighter plan on Mondays.
From 1 November to 31 March, the Summer Palace's separately ticketed attractions also close on Mondays except major holidays, while its park gates keep their off-season hours; of the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace, only the Forbidden City does not open at all on ordinary Mondays. We suggest a park-based Monday: walk the Temple of Heaven grounds, which open at 06:00, and save the ticketed attractions for another day, then put the Great Wall day or the hutong walk on a Monday and check the Mutianyu visitor notice for that date.
We suggest a relaxed midday break and saving the afternoon for one main sight. On your first day, after a long flight, we suggest keeping the plan light, and we suggest placing the spare day after the Great Wall day, so tired legs or a change of plan do not disturb a booked entry. On the spare day, we suggest a gentle choice such as a second hutong walk, a return to Jingshan Park or a stop at 798, rather than a new major sight.

Where can you eat jianbing for breakfast in Beijing?
Official Beijing sources name two places: the ground-floor breakfast stall in Chang'an Mall on Fuxingmenwai Avenue, where jianbing guozi is made on the spot, and a jianbing-making robot beside the tracks at Jingzhang Railway Heritage Park. Confirm opening hours locally before you go.
The Beijing Daily report on the Capital Window portal of 19 February 2025 describes the Chang'an Mall stall, on the west side of the ground floor and supplied by the mall's basement community canteen. Baozi, youtiao, shaobing and doufunao wait in warming cabinets, while jianbing guozi and wontons are made on the spot. The report says the stall packs up at 9:20 am, before the mall opens at 10 am.
The Beijing Administration for Market Regulation describes the Jingzhang Railway Heritage Park robot: visitors order on a screen, and a mechanical arm cooks the jianbing to preset parameters inside an enclosed unit. Beijing issued China's first licence for a hot-food catering robot on 11 July 2024.
Jianbing guozi was also on the food list of the 2026 Spring Festival temple fair at the Yexian Tower scenic area in Miyun, alongside old-Beijing tanghulu and xiaodiao pear soup, according to the Miyun District Culture and Tourism Bureau.
