After you buy on official 12306, you do not start at a paper-ticket window. You walk into the station with the same original passport you used on the order. China Railway (中国铁路) uses real-name ticketing. The 12306 English FAQ says you keep the e-ticket information and the valid ID used to buy it, and you show that ID to check in, check out, and board. Security is compulsory: bags go through the inspector, then you walk the security gate. After that you read the boards for waiting hall, check-in gate, and platform. At the ticket gate, show the same passport. If an automatic reader does not open, use the staffed lane. A printed itinerary sheet is not a ticket. I am Frank Zhang. What happens at a China train station after I buy on 12306?
You already have a real-name order. The next job is physical: entrance, security, waiting hall, ticket gate, platform. The FAQ is blunt about the layout. The ticket counter, the station entrance, the ticket gate, and the platforms are a few minutes' walk apart. There might be a queue at the ticket window, security check, ID verification counter, ticket gate, and baggage consignment counter. Ticket sales and check halt before departure. The time ahead is on the station announcement, not on this page.
I will not invent a 2026 "arrive 45 minutes early" rule. 12306 does not publish one number that fits Shanghai Hongqiao and a small city halt. On a first visit to a large hub, I give myself more time than the walk sounds. Then I read the screens.
Keep the 12306 English homepage order on your phone as a reminder. It is not a substitute for the passport.

The MTR High Speed Rail 12306 page says the same thing in different words: "Trip Information Reminders" collected at a counter or machine are not proof for travel and cannot be used to board.
How do I enter the station with a foreign passport?
China uses real-name ticketing. The FAQ says foreign passengers can buy real-name tickets with valid passports that can be used according to related regulations. On the English website, only valid foreign passports are accepted. That is the purchase rule. At the door, the same document is the one you show.
Carry the original. A phone photo of the bio page will not do. A different passport number will not do. The name and number on the 12306 order have to match the book in your hand. If you registered with a nickname, or dropped a middle name, the friction starts here, not on the train.
Most visitor tickets are e-tickets. The contract lives in the system. Paper tickets are still on sale, according to the same FAQ. Do not plan a high-speed trip around collecting a paper slip. If you already hold a paper ticket, take that ticket and the same original ID.
If you have not bought yet, stop and use 12306 train tickets for foreigners. Identity verification can take days. This page assumes the order is already paid.
Some large stations have a staffed ID check before or beside the security line. Some do not. Follow the signs for passengers with tickets, not the signs for people still buying. If you are lost, the staffed lane is the calm choice. I use it at Hongqiao whenever the auto reader looks like a Chinese-ID-only slot.
Is security check compulsory?
Yes. The FAQ states it without a visitor exception: according to relevant laws and regulations, all passengers and their belongings carried are subject to security check. When entering the station, place your baggage and belongings in the dangerous goods inspector and pass through the security gate. There might be a queue. Reserve enough time.
This is closer to an airport belt than to a metro X-ray, and it is still not a boarding pass check. You have not passed the ticket gate yet. Liquids, laptops, and belts are handled the way that station handles them that day. I will not invent a 2026 liquids chart beyond what 12306 lists.
The same FAQ names a short list of limited personal items: no more than 20 ml of nail polish, and no more than 120 ml of certain sprays; two small boxes of safety matches; two lighters. Guns, explosives, many knives, and flammable chemicals are prohibited. Read the full prohibited-items section on the 12306 English FAQ before you pack a kitchen knife into a suitcase. If you travel with a guide dog, the FAQ says wait for an inspection with your dog.
How do I pass the ticket gate: passport, QR, or paper?
For an e-ticket, the passport is the document that matters. Show the same original ID used to buy the ticket. That is the check-in rule on the English FAQ.
What I will not invent:
- A rule that every automatic gate in China reads every foreign passport.
- A rule that a 12306 app QR always opens the gate.
- A rule that a screenshot of the order is enough.
The English FAQ names the valid ID. The MTR page names a printed reminder and says it cannot board. If the 12306 app shows a code on your order screen, you can try it. If the glass stays shut, step out of the auto lane. Use the staffed lane. Hand the passport to the person. That is normal, not a failure.
Paper tickets still exist. If you bought a paper ticket, take the ticket and the ID. Do not throw the paper away because a blog said China is "ticketless."
At the arrival station you show the same ID to check out. Keep the passport in a pocket you can reach. Do not bury it under a 20 kg suitcase on a crowded platform.
If you lose the passport before you travel, the FAQ path is a replacement ID certificate from a competent issuing authority of the lost document, then boarding with that certificate. If you lose it on the train or before you exit, the FAQ has a replacement-ticket path and a later refund window. That is a bad morning. Read the lost-ID answers on 12306, and keep lost passport in China on your phone as the visitor version.
How do I find the waiting hall and the platform?
After security you are inside the station, not yet on the train. Look up. The FAQ tells you to watch the station announcement, the display, and staff reminders for train platform, waiting hall, check-in gate, ticket check time, and departure time.
Match four things on the board to your 12306 order:
- Train number.
- Destination station, not only the city. Shanghai Hongqiao is not Shanghai Station. Suzhou North is not Suzhou. Hangzhou East is not Hangzhou Station.
- Waiting hall or check-in gate.
- Departure time.
I will not invent a 2026 timetable, a gate-close minute, or a walk time for any one hall. Hongqiao is large. A small city station is not. The screens in front of you are the list. If the board and your order disagree, ask staff before you sit down at the wrong end of the building.
When the check-in gate opens, you do the passport (or paper) check again, then you walk to the platform. Checks halt before the train leaves. The FAQ says so. A pretty waiting-hall photo is not a seat.
Food is inside most large stations. Alipay for foreigners is what I use for a bottle of water. That is not a 12306 payment. Do not start a new wallet at the gate.
What luggage can I take through the station and onto the train?
The English FAQ states the free cabin luggage limits:
- 10 kg for children, including those travelling free.
- 35 kg for diplomats.
- 20 kg for other passengers.
- Maximum dimension of each item: 160 cm in total (rod-shaped items 200 cm) for traditional trains; 130 cm for EMU trains.
- Maximum weight for each item: 20 kg.
- Foldable wheelchairs used by people with disabilities are not included in that range.
EMU is the high-speed set most visitors ride. A 28-inch hard case is often the item that fails the 130 cm sum. I will not invent a fee for an oversized bag. If your suitcase is over the cabin limit, ask at the station about the baggage consignment counter — the FAQ names that counter as a place that queues. Check the station signs. Do not count on a last-minute consignment to save a departing G-train.
Keep the passport in a small bag you hold, not in the case on the belt.
How early should I arrive, and what if I am on 240-hour transit?
12306 does not give one number. It tells you to reserve enough time because the walks and the queues are real, and because checks stop before departure. Refer to that station's announcement for the time ahead.
My first-person version, not an official minute count: on a first Hongqiao morning I treat the station like a small airport. On a Suzhou repeat I still do not cut it to "the train is in ten minutes." The board, not a blog, decides when the gate closes.
If you entered on 240-hour visa-free transit, a 12306 seat is still not permission to leave the stay areas. Read that page before you pick a destination. Then board with the same passport that got the stamp.

What if the name on 12306 does not match my passport?
Fix it before you travel, through 12306 or a station window, following the live order. A nickname at the gate is a stuck morning. I will not invent a 2026 penalty figure.
How much luggage can I take on a high-speed train?
