What are the main ways to cross from Hong Kong to mainland China?

The main visitor crossings are West Kowloon high-speed rail, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge shuttle or coach, the Shenzhen land crossings by MTR or road, and ferry. When you leave Hong Kong SAR for mainland China, you clear separate immigration controls because they are separate immigration jurisdictions within China.

Choose according to your destination, luggage, departure point and whether you need to enter through a port recognised for 240-hour visa-free transit. Check Hong Kong Immigration Department control-point information and the relevant MTR process guidance before travel.

The Greater Bay Area, the cluster of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Foshan, is where these crossings sit. This guide focuses on choosing the crossing.

Which Hong Kong crossing is best for Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Zhuhai?

For Guangzhou, Shenzhen Futian or Shenzhen North and onward high-speed rail, West Kowloon is usually the cleanest choice, because Hong Kong and mainland immigration are both completed inside the station before boarding. For hotels near Luohu or Futian, the MTR East Rail Line to Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau Spur Line is simple with light luggage, and for Zhuhai or Macau the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the practical route.

Path Best when Immigration note ImmD / operator hours
West Kowloon high-speed rail You are heading to Shenzhen, Guangzhou or onward destinations on the high-speed rail network Hong Kong and mainland immigration are completed inside West Kowloon Station before boarding 6:30 am–11:30 pm at the Hong Kong control point; see ImmD and MTR
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge You are travelling toward Zhuhai or Macau ports, or need one of the recognised 240-hour entry ports Clear Hong Kong exit at Hong Kong Port, then mainland or Macau entry after the shuttle or coach journey Hong Kong immigration operates 24 hours; ImmD, HZMB passenger guide and HZMB Bus
Lo Wu to Luohu You are staying in eastern Shenzhen and want a direct MTR crossing Take the MTR East Rail Line to Lo Wu, then clear Hong Kong exit and mainland entry on foot 6:30 am–midnight; ImmD
Lok Ma Chau Spur Line to Futian You are staying near Futian or want a rail-based alternative to Lo Wu Take the MTR East Rail Line to Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, then walk through to Futian 6:30 am–10:30 pm; ImmD
Lok Ma Chau road to Huanggang You are using a cross-boundary coach or shuttle and need a 24-hour road control point Clear Hong Kong and mainland immigration at the road crossing 24 hours; ImmD
Shenzhen Bay You are using a road coach toward western Shenzhen or need a road crossing with late hours Coach or private-vehicle passengers clear immigration at this road control point Passenger clearance 6:30 am–midnight; ImmD
Heung Yuen Wai, also known as Liantang Your road itinerary suits eastern Shenzhen or onward Guangdong routes Clear Hong Kong exit and mainland entry at the road port 7:00 am–10:00 pm; ImmD
Ferry to mainland ports You prefer a sea crossing toward a mainland ferry port Clear Hong Kong exit and mainland entry at the relevant ferry port China Ferry Terminal passenger clearance 7:00 am–midnight; ImmD. Macao Ferry Terminal is for Hong Kong–Macau sailings, not mainland entry
Sha Tau Kok Not currently available for ordinary visitor planning Passenger clearance services are suspended until further notice Suspended; ImmD

Hours can change on public holidays and peak travel days. Confirm the day-of position with ImmD and the transport operator.

2. Step by step per major path

West Kowloon high-speed rail

West Kowloon is usually the cleanest choice for Guangzhou and for travellers connecting onward through the mainland high-speed rail network. Common destinations include Shenzhen Futian, Shenzhen North, Guangzhou South and Guangzhou East, with further connections available across the network. Check the MTR destination and train information and search or book through 12306; do not assume a particular departure time.

The process is a co-location arrangement:

  1. Arrive at Hong Kong West Kowloon Station with the same valid passport used to buy the ticket.
  2. Complete real-name checking and security screening.
  3. Proceed to the departure concourse on Level B3.
  4. Complete both Hong Kong and mainland immigration formalities inside the station.
  5. Continue to the platform and board the train.

MTR says passengers may begin the real-name, security, immigration and boarding process as early as 90 minutes before departure. The process commonly takes around 30–45 minutes, but passport holders, traditional immigration counters, weekends, public holidays and festive periods may require more time. The real-name process ceases 30 minutes before departure, so arriving close to departure is risky.

After arriving at a mainland station, follow the arrival and exit procedure described in China train stations for foreigners. For ticketing rules and booking workflow, use 12306 train tickets for foreigners. These are separate planning topics from the crossing choice.

Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

For the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, travel first to Hong Kong Port at the airport-island side of Hong Kong. Clear Hong Kong departure immigration, then take an official shuttle bus or an eligible cross-boundary coach toward the Zhuhai Port or Macau Port. At the destination, clear mainland or Macau entry formalities as applicable.

The HZMB Bus operator provides current operating information. Daytime shuttles are frequent, while overnight service is less frequent. Hong Kong immigration at the HZMB control point operates 24 hours according to ImmD.

This is a practical route for Zhuhai, Macau and certain 240-hour transit plans. It is not a self-drive product. Private-car schemes exist for eligible vehicles and users, but LocalKey does not arrange self-drive travel.

Shenzhen land crossings by rail

For Luohu, take the MTR East Rail Line to Lo Wu. Walk through the Hong Kong control area, clear mainland immigration and continue into the Luohu district of Shenzhen.

For Futian, take the MTR East Rail Line to Lok Ma Chau Spur Line. After Hong Kong departure clearance, walk across the boundary facilities to Futian.

These routes are useful when your hotel or meeting is close to Luohu or Futian. They can also be simple for short city visits with light luggage. However, Lo Wu and Futian are not 240-hour entry ports. Check the current Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line hours before setting an early or late departure.

Shenzhen land crossings by road

Road crossings suit travellers with a cross-boundary coach or shuttle rather than the MTR East Rail Line.

  • Lok Ma Chau–Huanggang: a 24-hour road control point, commonly used by cross-boundary shuttles and coaches.
  • Shenzhen Bay: suitable for road journeys toward western Shenzhen and nearby areas; passenger clearance is listed by ImmD as 6:30 am to midnight.
  • Heung Yuen Wai: also known as Liantang, with passenger clearance listed as 7:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Reach the Hong Kong-side terminal, board the approved coach or shuttle, clear Hong Kong departure controls, then complete mainland entry. Confirm the carrier's boarding point and baggage rules before departure.

Ferry

Ferry can suit travellers near waterfront terminals such as Tsim Sha Tsui when the sailing goes to a mainland port. China Ferry Terminal has its own sailing schedules, boarding cut-offs and immigration arrangements — check the operator, not only ImmD terminal hours. Macao Ferry Terminal serves Hong Kong–Macau sailings and is not a mainland-entry path.

For 240-hour ferry-port eligibility, use the 240-hour visa-free China guide. A ferry ticket alone does not establish eligibility.

Which Hong Kong crossings work for 240-hour visa-free entry?

As of the 27 September 2026 policy check, the listed 240-hour entry options for a land crossing from Hong Kong SAR are West Kowloon Station Port and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port only, subject to nationality, onward-ticket and other policy requirements. Luohu, Futian, Huanggang, Shenzhen Bay and Gongbei are not 240-hour entry ports.

Read the full 240-hour visa-free China guide before choosing a route. It covers eligibility and the broader policy framework without making the crossing decision for you. For visas, re-entry and the onward-ticket “third country or region” question across Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and mainland China, see Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China visas and 240-hour re-entry.

3. Mistakes and edge cases

Separate immigration jurisdictions

Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR are not mainland cities for immigration purposes. They operate separate immigration jurisdictions within China. Leaving Hong Kong SAR for mainland China therefore means completing Hong Kong departure controls and mainland entry controls, even when the journey is short.

The same passport for West Kowloon

Use the same passport for the rail ticket, real-name check and boarding. If your booking details and travel document do not match, the station process may not proceed as expected.

Hours and queues

Opening hours are not a guarantee of immediate clearance. Queues lengthen on weekends, public holidays and festivals. Check ImmD control-point updates on the day and allow extra time for coach boarding and luggage.

Macau and Zhuhai

For Macau SAR to Zhuhai and onward Guangzhou crossings, trains and 240-hour port notes, see Macau to Zhuhai and Guangzhou: crossings, trains and what changes at the border.

For whether Shenzhen is worth a stop beside Hong Kong SAR — days, districts and metro notes — see Shenzhen for travellers: is it worth a stop?.

For HKD, MOP and RMB legal tender, cash declaration thresholds and ATMs across Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and the mainland, see Money for Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China: HKD, MOP and RMB.

The best crossing depends on your actual destination, passport, onward route, luggage and arrival time. A LocalKey consultant should confirm the border choice against the day’s operating hours and your entry documents before booking the final connection.

FAQ

What is the best crossing from Hong Kong to Guangzhou?

West Kowloon high-speed rail is usually the most direct choice for Guangzhou because Hong Kong and mainland immigration are completed inside the station before boarding. Check the MTR and 12306 schedules for your travel date, and allow extra time for the station process.

How does West Kowloon co-location work?

At West Kowloon Station, you complete real-name checking, security screening, Hong Kong departure immigration and mainland entry immigration inside the station. The controls are completed on Level B3 before you board the train. Use the same passport that was used to buy the ticket.

Which Hong Kong crossings support 240-hour visa-free entry?

For a land crossing from Hong Kong, West Kowloon Station Port and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port are the listed entry options, subject to eligibility and onward-ticket requirements. Luohu, Futian, Huanggang, Shenzhen Bay and Gongbei are not 240-hour entry ports as of the 27 September 2026 policy check.

Is Lo Wu or West Kowloon better for Shenzhen?

Choose Lo Wu when your destination is convenient for Luohu and you prefer the MTR East Rail Line with a walk across the boundary. Choose West Kowloon when you want a booked high-speed train, need the 240-hour entry-port option or are continuing to Guangzhou and the wider rail network.

How do I take the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to Zhuhai?

Travel to Hong Kong Port, clear Hong Kong departure immigration, then take the official shuttle bus or an eligible cross-boundary coach to Zhuhai Port. Complete mainland entry formalities after arrival. Check HZMB Bus for current operating information.

Is Sha Tau Kok open for passenger crossings?

No. ImmD lists passenger clearance services at Sha Tau Kok Control Point as suspended until further notice. Choose another crossing and check the latest ImmD notice before travelling.

What is the difference between Independent and Private Guided travel?

Independent includes hotel and train booking, an app roadbook, optional transfer support and an optional local guide add-on. Private Guided includes a guide and driver from the border or across the trip. Both can be planned around your preferred Hong Kong-to-mainland crossing.
