Yes. Yungang — 云冈石窟 — is a Buddhist cave fabric west of Datong in Shanxi. That is the sit. A locked coach that sells a "Yungang tour" as every named cave plus a photo stop at Cave 20 is a different SKU. I am Frank Zhang. This page is how an independent traveler sits 云冈石窟 — Self-Guided or Tailor-Made — without buying the Yungang tour.
The cliffs are a World Heritage listing. The UNESCO World Heritage page for the Yungang Grottoes records the property inscribed in 2001, criteria (i)(ii)(iii)(iv), 348.75 ha plus a 846.81 ha buffer, dossier 1039, in Datong City, Shanxi Province. China's National Cultural Heritage Administration page titles the listing 云冈石窟; places the heritage in 山西省大同市; lists the same four criteria; dates the inscription to 2001; and places the caves 16 km west of Datong on the south slope of Wuzhou Mountain, stretching about 1 km east–west. UNESCO's brief synthesis counts 252 caves and niches and 51,000 statues within a carved area of 18,000 square meters, cut from the mid-5th century to the early 6th century AD. NCHA counts 大小窟龛254个, 主要洞窟45座, 造像51000余尊, and dates the carving window to Northern Wei 460—525. You sit one cliff fabric. You do not punch-card every niche and a timed Five Caves loop in one morning.
The listing is one Datong cliff, not one cave punch card
UNESCO keeps Datong under one 2001 file. NCHA names the same city as 山西省大同市. Keep the fabric as one sit when you plan the day. A brochure that stacks every cave into one timed loop is a group product.
| Sit | Official lock | What you do | What it is not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yungang Grottoes / 云冈石窟 | UNESCO: Datong City, Shanxi; 348.75 ha / 846.81 ha buffer; dossier 1039; 2001; criteria (i)(ii)(iii)(iv). NCHA: 山西省大同市; 城西16千米武周山南麓; 东西绵延约1千米 | Walk one open cliff path the site already uses. Sit if a terrace is open. Photograph if the site allows it | A cave punch card |
| Cave and statue counts | UNESCO: 252 caves and niches; 51,000 statues; 18,000 m² carved. NCHA: 大小窟龛254个; 主要洞窟45座; 造像51000余尊 | Cite each file as it stands; do not invent a merged count | Proof that you "did every niche" |
| Tan Yao Five Caves | UNESCO: Five Caves created by Tan Yao; strict unity of layout and design; first peak of Chinese Buddhist cave art; built with Northern Wei imperial instructions | Keep the Five Caves as the lock if the site opens that stretch | A timed Five Caves SKU I will not invent |
| Carving window | UNESCO: mid-5th to early-6th century AD. NCHA: 北魏时期(460—525年) | Cite each file as it stands | A new combined date |
| Cave 20 plaza | NCHA caption on the same file: 云冈20窟广场 | Sit the open plaza if the site opens it | A height I will not invent |
Sources for the sit column: UNESCO 1039; NCHA 云冈石窟.
I will not invent a 2026 ticket price, an opening-hour table, a bus number, a visitor count, a statue height, or a ranked "best cave." Those change. UNESCO and NCHA keep the criteria, 山西省大同市, 2001, 348.75 ha / 846.81 ha buffer, the 252 / 254 count difference across files, Tan Yao Five Caves, Northern Wei 460—525 on the NCHA file, and 云冈20窟广场. That is the lock.
This page is Shanxi — 山西, Datong as NCHA places it. It is not Longmen Grottoes 2026 and not Dazu Rock Carvings 2026. Do not collapse a Datong cliff into a Luoyang river or a Chongqing gorge because all three are caves on a brochure.
How to sit without a Yungang tour
Go toward 山西省大同市 as NCHA places it: Datong, Shanxi, about 16 km west of the city on the south slope of Wuzhou Mountain. The official files do not publish a 2026 bus number, gate price, or timed-entry table on those pages, so I will not invent either. Arrive at one cliff approach. Walk the path the site already uses toward one open stretch. Sit if a terrace or plaza is open. Say 云冈石窟, or a named fabric — 昙曜五窟, 云冈20窟 — if you need a word. Photograph only if the site allows it. Do not buy a locked departure that sells every cave as stop one through twelve on a commission day.
Pay by QR for a ticket if the site uses QR. Set up Alipay for foreigners before you want the day, not at the gate. Cash still appears in smaller rooms. Do not count on English on every path.
Sister sits already live on this site: Longmen Grottoes 2026 for Luoyang Yi River cliffs, not this Datong mass; Dazu Rock Carvings 2026 for Chongqing hillside clusters, not Shanxi; Dunhuang Mogao Caves 2026 for painted cave temples on the Hexi corridor, not open cliff niches west of Datong; Pingyao ancient city 2026 for another Shanxi fabric that is a walled county city, not a cave cliff. China photography trip 2026 is the wider photo map. Keep them apart. UNESCO 1039 is a Datong cliff fabric, not a Longmen river, a Dazu gorge, a Mogao painted cave, or a Pingyao wall.
Can foreigners visit 云冈石窟 in 2026 without speaking Chinese?
Yes. Walk one open cliff path. Sit if a terrace is open. Say 云冈石窟 or the place name. Point if you need a ticket window. Do not count on English on every path. Pay by QR after you buy what you need.
Do I need a Chinese bank card to pay at 云冈石窟?
No. Pay by QR where the site uses QR. Set up Alipay for foreigners before the day. Cash still appears in some rooms. This page does not invent a 2026 ticket price.
Is Yungang the same as Longmen, Dazu, or Mogao?
No. Yungang is caves west of Datong in Shanxi — UNESCO 1039, 2001, criteria (i)(ii)(iii)(iv). Longmen is caves on both banks of the Yi River south of Luoyang. Dazu is five clusters in Dazu District, Chongqing. Mogao is painted cave temples at Dunhuang. The sister sits are Longmen Grottoes 2026, Dazu Rock Carvings 2026, and Dunhuang Mogao Caves 2026. Do not buy a "four grottoes" combo that these files do not make.
Do I need a Yungang tour to see the cliffs?
No. The sit is one open cliff fabric, not stop three on a Datong commission loop. Self-Guided or Tailor-Made can put one Yungang day into a Shanxi week you already chose — next to Pingyao only if you want a second, separate heritage day, not a combo SKU. A locked Yungang departure is a group tour. We do not sell that.
Self-Guided or Tailor-Made around 云冈石窟
If you want the cliffs inside a week you already chose — Datong as its own day, Pingyao kept honest as a separate sit, no cave punch-card coach — use Self-Guided Tours or Tailor-Made Tours. We book the pieces and put a roadbook in the app, with WhatsApp or WeChat support. We do not sell a Yungang group tour. Contact when you want the week built around one cliff sit, not a commission coach.
