Yes. Pingyao Ancient City — 平遥古城 — is a walled Han county city you walk: streets inside the wall, shops and courtyard houses, and two temples outside the county seat. That is the sit. A locked coach that sells a "Pingyao tour" as a wall loop plus two temple photo stops is a different SKU. I am Frank Zhang. The city is a World Heritage listing. The UNESCO World Heritage page for the Ancient City of Ping Yao records the property inscribed in 1997, criteria (ii)(iii)(iv), 245.62 ha plus a 95.99 ha buffer, dossier 812, serial yes. China's National Cultural Heritage Administration page titles the listing 平遥古城; places the heritage in 山西省晋中市平遥县; lists the same three criteria; dates the inscription to 1997; and names the protected area as 一城两寺: the walled city plus 镇国寺 and 双林寺 in the suburbs. NCHA sizes the area inside the wall at 2.25 km² and counts 4 avenues, 8 small streets, and 72 lanes. UNESCO's Outstanding Universal Value sizes that walled city at 225 hectares, founded in the 14th century, and keeps Shuanglin Temple 6 km southwest of the county seat and Zhenguo Temple 12 km northeast. You sit one fabric. You do not punch-card the wall and both temples in one timed morning.
The listing is one city and two temples, not one combo ticket day
UNESCO and NCHA keep three named parts under one 1997 file. Keep them apart when you plan the day. A brochure that stacks the wall, Shuanglin, and Zhenguo into one timed loop is a group product.

I will not invent a 2026 ticket price, an opening-hour table, a bus number, a wall height, or a ranked "best street." Those change. UNESCO and NCHA keep the criteria, the hectares, 一城两寺, the 14th-century walled city, the 4 / 8 / 72 street count, the nearly 4,000 shops and dwellings, the 19th–early 20th century banking role, Shuanglin's sculptures, and Zhenguo's Wanfo Shrine. That is the lock.
This page is Shanxi — 山西, Jinzhong, Pingyao County. It is not Shaanxi — 陕西 — and it is not Xi'an culture 2026. Do not collapse a walled county city into a Tang capital SKU because the English spellings look close.
How to sit without a Pingyao tour
Go toward 平遥 as NCHA places it: Pingyao County, Jinzhong, Shanxi. The official files do not publish a 2026 bus number or a gate price on those pages, so I will not invent either. Arrive inside the wall. Walk one of the four avenues or one lane the site already uses. Sit if a courtyard, shop, or wall stretch is open. Say 平遥古城 if you need a name. Photograph streets and roofs only if the site allows it. Do not buy a locked departure that sells the wall, a temple, and a souvenir hard-sell as stop two, three, and four on a commission day.
Pay by QR for a ticket if the site uses QR. Set up Alipay for foreigners before you want the day, not at the gate. Cash still appears in smaller rooms. Do not count on English on the wall.

Do I need a Pingyao tour to see the wall?

Keep this as one fabric or one wall stretch, not a third attraction pasted between shopping stops.
