Yes. Suzhou embroidery — 苏绣 — is a sit-down with a needle. Silk thread on silk, a finished surface that looks like painting until you lean in. That is the craft. A locked van that treats Zhenhu as stop three on a shopping circuit is a different SKU.

The stitch is a national listing, not a mall stop
The China Intangible Cultural Heritage Digital Museum records 苏绣 as national item Ⅶ-18, first batch, 2006, declared by Suzhou, Jiangsu. The protection unit named on the listing is Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute Co., Ltd. The official description places the surviving workshops mainly in the city and in Gaoxin District's Dongzhu and Zhenhu streets. That is a technique with a place. It is not a souvenir aisle.
Suzhou's own gazetteer office keeps the same frame. The Suzhou Local Chronicles office page on 苏绣 says the craft entered the first national intangible-heritage list on 20 May 2006, and that Zhenhu later held a Jiangsu traditional craft industry base title and a national productive-protection demonstration base for the embroidery art museum. The Suzhou Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau note on Zhenhu still calls Zhenhu the embroidery hometown and names the living talent ladder there. I will not invent a 2026 workshop price or a street stall ranking. Those change.
The ICH page names three living lineages with clear successors: traditional fine embroidery (细绣), Shen Shou's "simulation embroidery" (仿真绣), and Yang Shouyu's "random-stitch embroidery" (乱针绣). Ding Pei's Qing-dynasty 《绣谱》 and Shen Shou's 《雪宧绣谱》 sit in the official story as the written craft. You sit to watch a stitch, or to choose one finished piece you will actually use. You do not need a coach that sells "Suzhou embroidery" as a timed photo and a hard sell.
How to sit without a craft tour
Walk a lane in Zhenhu or a city studio that already works by appointment. If a door is open and a table is free, sit. Say 苏绣 (Sū xiù) or 刺绣 (cì xiù). Ask to see one unfinished piece under the lamp. Photograph the needle only if the maker nods. Do not pose a finished panel you did not buy.

This is not Jingdezhen's kiln. Porcelain you will actually drink from is on Jingdezhen porcelain 2026. Gardens and the rest of the city sit on Suzhou beyond classical gardens. Do not paste a kiln and a garden ticket onto one embroidery morning because a brochure used the word craft twice.
Is Suzhou embroidery the same as machine embroidery?
No. The national listing is hand embroidery as traditional fine arts. The same ICH page says computer embroidery shrank the living space for high skill. Machine work on a mall rack is a product. The craft you sit for is hand stitch under a lamp.
How do foreigners visit 苏绣 without a craft tour?
