We suggest the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and the Nanyue King Museum for old Canton, Shamian and Yuexiu Park for a slower walk, and Canton Tower with an evening on the Pearl River for the new city; we usually plan two to three days.
For travellers considering private China tours, we suggest dividing your time geographically across the city rather than crossing town multiple times. The provincial capital of Guangdong brings together Lingnan heritage sites, historic waterfront architecture along the Pearl River, and Canton Tower on the new city central axis. LocalKey can arrange your stay as an Independent or a Private Guided trip; see our Guangzhou overview for the city.
If you are exploring the wider region, this stop connects naturally into our Guangzhou and Shenzhen itinerary. For morning tea culture, see our Guangzhou morning tea guide.
What should you do in Guangzhou on a first visit?
Guangzhou's principal sights span ancestral clan architecture in Liwan, early dynastic archaeological sites, historic tree-lined riverbanks, and modern engineering on the new central axis. For a balanced first visit, we suggest one day in Liwan and one day around the Nanyue tomb site and Yuexiu Park, with the Pearl River in the evening.
| Sight | What it is | Anchor fact | Suited to (our advice) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chen Clan Ancestral Hall | Clan hall and folk art museum | Built 1888–1893 by Chen clans from 72 counties; home of Guangdong Folk Arts Museum with over 20,000 pieces | Anyone interested in southern architectural craft and woodwork |
| Nanyue King Museum (King's Tomb site) | Archaeological site museum | Opened in 1988 as the Nanyue King Museum of the Western Han Dynasty; the museum's two sites cover more than 2,000 years of Lingnan history | Travellers seeking early imperial history and archaeology |
| Guangzhou Museum at Zhenhai Tower, Yuexiu Park | City historical museum in a Ming tower | Five-storey tower built in 1380 on Yuexiu Hill; municipal museum opened 11 February 1929 | A quiet overview of city growth paired with park walking |
| Shamian | River island neighbourhood | Island of about 0.30 square kilometres; 56 national-level cultural relic sites and 137 ancient and notable trees | A relaxed outdoor walk among historic consular buildings |
| Canton Tower | Observation tower | 600 m high structure opened 1 October 2010 on the new city central axis | Skyline views across Zhujiang New Town and evening orientation |
| Pearl River night cruise | River boat excursion | Official site sells a Canton Tower and Pearl River night cruise | An easy evening perspective on the illuminated waterfront |
| Baiyun Mountain | Mountain scenic area | 20.98 square kilometres scenic area with highest peak Moxing Ridge at 382 m above sea level | Green space, light walking, and elevated views above downtown |
We suggest pairing Chen Clan Ancestral Hall with Shamian during your first full morning and afternoon. Both sites sit in Liwan District, making it practical to explore traditional decorative carving and island riverfront architecture together.
On a second day, we suggest combining the Site of King's Tomb at the Nanyue King Museum with Zhenhai Tower in Yuexiu Park. This pairs the Western Han tomb with the Ming-era tower built in 1380. Canton Tower and the night cruise can take the evening of day 2 or a third half-day, and we add Baiyun Mountain only on a three-day stay.
For families with young children or multigenerational groups on family-friendly China trips, we usually plan open spaces like Yuexiu Park and Shamian during daylight hours, followed by Canton Tower and a river cruise once the city lights come on.
Where can you see old Canton's history and craft?
Old Canton's history and decorative traditions centre on the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall in Liwan District and the Nanyue King Museum across its two sites. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall highlights clan organisation and southern building trades, while the Nanyue King Museum preserves archaeological remains spanning more than 2,000 years of Lingnan history.
Located at No. 34 Enlongli, Zhongshan 7th Road, Liwan District, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall was built between 1888 and 1893 by Chen clans from 72 counties across Guangdong Province. It served as a shared compound where clan members lodged when travelling to the provincial capital for imperial civil service examinations, official business, lawsuits, or provincial taxes. Today, it stands as a national key cultural relic protection unit, protected since 1988, and houses the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum, which has occupied the complex since 1959 and holds a collection of more than 20,000 pieces.
Architecturally, the compound is decorated with wood, brick and stone carving, ceramic and plaster sculpture, copper and iron casting, and painting. Travellers interested in southern decorative traditions can explore deeper regional styles in our guide to Guangdong Lingnan culture and our cultural travel experiences.
For earlier origins, the Nanyue King Museum provides direct access to primary archaeological remains across its two urban locations. The Site of King's Tomb, located at No. 867 Jiefang North Road, opened in 1988 as the Nanyue King Museum of the Western Han Dynasty and encloses the excavated Tomb of Nanyue King Wen. The Site of Palace and Garden, situated at No. 374 Beijing Road, opened in 2014 and protects the structural traces of the Nanyue Kingdom palace. Together across both locations, the museum, which also covers the Nanhan Kingdom, documents more than 2,000 years of Lingnan history.
We suggest allocating a dedicated morning to the tomb site at Jiefang North Road alongside Zhenhai Tower. If your schedule allows additional time, we suggest pairing the tomb site with a walk through the palace remains at Beijing Road.
What can you do on the Pearl River and around Canton Tower?
Canton Tower stands where the new city central axis meets the Pearl River, in Haizhu District facing Zhujiang New Town and Haixinsha Island. Visitors can observe the city from elevated observation platforms or take an evening boat cruise along the river.
Canton Tower reaches a total height of 600 metres, comprising a 450-metre main tower body topped by a 150-metre antenna mast. Opened on 1 October 2010, the tower offers observation areas at multiple elevations. The 450M Look Out serves as an outdoor observation platform, while the 488M Look Out, situated on the upper section of the antenna mast, represents the highest point accessible to visitors. Official business hours run 09:30–22:30.
The official ticketing service also sells a Canton Tower and Pearl River night cruise.
We suggest timing your visit to Canton Tower for late afternoon, arriving around an hour before dusk. We usually plan the official night cruise for the same evening.
Where can you get some green space or a quieter half-day?
For green space or a quieter walking pace, we suggest Shamian island, Yuexiu Park or Baiyun Mountain. We usually plan one of them as a half-day between the busier sights.
Shamian is an island neighbourhood in Liwan District covering approximately 0.30 square kilometres on the Pearl River. The island has 137 ancient and notable trees. During the twentieth century, Shamian hosted foreign consulates from more than 10 countries, alongside 9 foreign banks and over 40 foreign companies. Today, the island features 56 recognised national-level cultural relic buildings or sites, including the former Soviet Consulate at No. 68 Shamian Street, known as the Western Red Building.
Yuexiu Park incorporates Yuexiu Hill and contains the Guangzhou Museum within the Zhenhai Tower exhibition area. Zhenhai Tower was built in 1380, during the 13th year of the Hongwu reign in the Ming dynasty, when the city's northern wall was extended over Yuexiu Hill. Because the structure rises five storeys high, it is locally called the "Five-Storey Tower." On 11 February 1929, the Guangzhou municipal museum opened inside the tower.
In the north-east of downtown Guangzhou stands Baiyun Mountain, an expansive scenic area covering 20.98 square kilometres designated as a national 5A scenic area. Its highest peak, Moxing Ridge, rises 382 metres above sea level.
For a scenic walk combined with historical context, we suggest visiting Zhenhai Tower inside Yuexiu Park on your Yuexiu Park day. For an open green escape, we suggest Baiyun Mountain on a clear morning.
When is Guangzhou busiest, and how long should you stay?
The 140th China Import and Export Fair runs in Guangzhou from 15 October to 4 November 2026. We suggest two to three days for sightseeing.
The fair is structured across three phases:
- Phase 1: 15–19 October 2026
- Phase 2: 23–27 October 2026
- Phase 3: 31 October–4 November 2026
We advise booking hotels early if your travel dates coincide with these exhibition windows.
For international travellers transiting through southern China, Guangdong Province is one of the 24 permitted provincial-level areas under the 240-hour visa-free transit framework; rules and entry requirements are detailed in our 240-hour visa-free transit guide.
If you are continuing your journey into the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Hong Kong maintains its own entry system, with crossing options explained in our guide to Hong Kong border crossings. Onward connections to Shenzhen and Hong Kong can be incorporated smoothly into your broader South China plans.
