The short version

A practical 10–14 day China Christmas and New Year route from Shanghai through Xi'an to Beijing, with optional Hangzhou or Suzhou, rail planning and seasonal advice.

Updated 1 October 2026 · LocalKey consultant team

A practical China Christmas-to-New-Year trip is a 10–14 day Shanghai → Xi'an → Beijing high-speed-rail route, with optional Hangzhou or Suzhou for 14 days, Christmas week sightseeing, and a Beijing New Year's Eve and 1 January finish. It can be booked as Independent or Private Guided.

What does a 10–14 day China Christmas and New Year itinerary look like?

A 10-day route links Shanghai, Xi'an and Beijing by high-speed rail, while a 14-day version adds Hangzhou, Suzhou or a slower Beijing buffer before departure.

The route is designed around manageable winter transfers, city sightseeing and a final Beijing stay. See the destination overviews for Shanghai, Xi'an and Beijing.

10-day core route

Dates below are illustrative for a late-December to early-January journey.

Day Base Focus
1 Shanghai Arrive; Bund and waterfront walk; settle payments and eSIM
2 Shanghai Christmas Eve atmosphere around malls and Nanjing Road commercial decor; Yu Garden and old town; generally normal hours (confirm each venue)
3 Shanghai Christmas Day sightseeing at museums and neighbourhoods; evening rail or next-morning rail preparation
4 Transfer + Xi'an High-speed rail from Shanghai to Xi'an; Muslim Quarter evening
5 Xi'an Terracotta Warriors; city wall with winter layers
6 Transfer + Beijing High-speed rail from Xi'an to Beijing; hutong or neighbourhood evening
7 Beijing Forbidden City and nearby capital core
8 Beijing Great Wall day at Mutianyu or a similar restored section, selected as a planning option
9 Beijing 31 December; plan around official countdown notices; choose one area only because crowd controls are possible
10 Beijing 1 January; quieter capital morning or flexible Wall or park visit; depart

For a 14-day version, insert Hangzhou for a West Lake winter stay and/or Suzhou for a garden visit after Shanghai and before Xi'an, or add a slower Beijing buffer with another museum, neighbourhood or weather-flexible day. Keep Christmas Eve in Shanghai and 31 December / 1 January in Beijing either by starting a few days earlier or by extending the Beijing finish — do not flip those seasonal anchors.

Keep the journey rail-led and allow room for station transfers, security checks and winter delays. For entry planning, review the 240-hour visa-free China guide or 30-day visa-free China guide if your passport and routing qualify.

Christmas and New Year travel also benefits from early practical preparation. Compare WeChat Pay for foreigners and Alipay for foreigners, arrange an eSIM or SIM for China, and save the China travel emergency contacts.

Why is Christmas week easier for travel than Chinese New Year?

Christmas week is generally easier than Chinese New Year because Christmas is not a mainland public holiday, while Spring Festival brings the country’s largest domestic travel movement, family closures and heavy rail demand.

Christmas is not listed as a mainland public holiday under the State Council holiday regulation, Decree 795. Shops and attractions generally keep normal hours on 24 and 25 December, although individual venues can change schedules, close for maintenance or require advance booking.

Late November to mid-December and Christmas week are usually low or shoulder season for hotels in most cities. Exceptions include Harbin’s ice-and-snow season, Sanya and Hainan’s winter peak, ski resorts, and the night of 31 December in major city centres. Rates can rise for specific dates and locations, so check the exact hotel calendar rather than assuming uniform seasonality.

1 January is a statutory public holiday. For the surrounding days in late 2026 and early 2027, check the State Council General Office notice on gov.cn when it is published, usually around November. As a prior example only, the published 2026 arrangement covered 1–3 January 2026 in this gov.cn holiday notice.

Spring Festival 2027 falls around 6 February 2027, according to this China Meteorological Administration and Beijing Science Center explainer. Compared with Christmas week, Spring Festival is the busiest domestic travel period: many family-run shops close, and popular trains can sell out. For 2027 dates, closures and train-sale timing, see our Chinese New Year 2027 travel guide.

For month-level planning context, see the when to visit China month-by-month guide. Winter conditions are manageable with the right layers. Approximate December normals are around 11°C high and 5°C low in Shanghai, around 6.6°C high and −2.7°C low in Xi'an, and colder, drier conditions in Beijing with near-freezing or below-freezing nights.

For a seasonal overview, see Christmas in China and the detailed Christmas in China 2026 guide.

Harbin can be added as a short optional ice-and-snow branch for travellers prioritising winter scenery, but it should not replace the core route without allowing extra travel time. For a dedicated plan, see the Harbin ice and snow winter trip guide. Check official venue notices for opening dates rather than relying on an assumed season calendar. If you are choosing between Harbin's cold and a warmer south, see winter in China for where to go by region from December to February.

Where should you spend Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve on this route?

Spend Christmas Eve in Shanghai for commercial decorations and an easy first-city evening, then use Beijing as the New Year's base while following official event notices and crowd-control instructions.

In Shanghai, plan Christmas Eve around malls, Nanjing Road, the waterfront and Yu Garden or old-town areas. Christmas Day can remain a normal sightseeing day, subject to each museum or attraction’s published hours. Do not plan around a Bund midnight countdown: the established 2025–26 arrangement used major-activity lighting without a landscape-lighting midnight countdown. Check the New Year's Eve in China 2026 guide for city event detail.

Beijing is the more practical final base because the route already ends there and the capital has previously hosted organised multi-site celebrations. For 2025–26, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism described official countdown activity across sites including the Great Bell Temple and Juyongguan, as reported by Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism and the Beijing municipal government. Venues and times for 31 December 2026 remain subject to later official notices.

Choose one principal area for New Year's Eve rather than attempting several distant events. Large-city celebration zones may close, require tickets or introduce controlled entry, so follow police notices, venue instructions and transport updates. Keep the return journey simple and avoid relying on an unannounced midnight transport extension.

On 1 January, a quieter Beijing morning can include a park, neighbourhood walk or flexible Great Wall plan if weather and transport allow. The Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai private tour guide is a useful non-seasonal reference for comparing route structure.

How do Independent and Private Guided change this winter trip?

Independent gives you a structured rail-led route with a local guide as an optional add-on, while Private Guided includes private guides plus a driver and car for a more supported winter journey.

Independent suits travellers who want a clear plan, pre-arranged hotels and rail logistics while keeping some sightseeing flexible. Local guide support can be added for selected days such as the Terracotta Warriors, Forbidden City or Great Wall.

Private Guided adds private guides plus a driver and car, which can simplify station transfers, winter-weather changes, early starts and visits outside city centres. It is particularly useful when the itinerary includes the Great Wall, multiple generations or a fixed New Year's Eve plan.

Both options can be developed through private China tours, with Christmas-season planning available through the Christmas in China seasonal hub. LocalKey specialists can coordinate rail timing, venue checks, payment preparation, eSIM planning and backup arrangements around official holiday notices.
