Treat Guilin as one karst river with two bases: Guilin city for a bowl of Guilin rice noodles and a Gui opera evening if one is on, and Yangshuo county town downstream for the Li River banks, the quieter Yulong River and Xingping. You do not need a group Li River cruise to see the karst; UNESCO already lists the towers and cones, and you can sit with them from a bank, a street or a bike.

Why is Guilin's karst a UNESCO World Heritage site?
Guilin's karst is a World Heritage site because UNESCO added Guilin Karst to the South China Karst serial property in the 2014 Phase II extension, under natural criteria (vii) and (viii). It is the Guangxi component, known for fenglin (tower) and fengcong (cone) karst.
South China Karst spans seven karst clusters in four provinces. UNESCO places the Guilin Karst component inside Lijiang National Park, with fenglin (tower) and fengcong (cone) formations, and divides it into the Putao section (2,840 hectares, 21,610-hectare buffer) and the Lijiang section (22,544 hectares, 23,070-hectare buffer). The World Heritage Committee decision (38 COM 8B.9) approved the 2014 extension under criteria (vii) and (viii). Guangxi also holds a second component, Huanjiang Karst, a cone cluster in Mulun National Nature Reserve. Two clusters in one autonomous region; not one boat ticket.
The city puts the water first. Guilin's 2026 world-class tourism city meeting (31 March 2026) put Li River basin ecology ahead of culture and outdoor days, and the city's 2024 plan report records the main stem as Class II water and an annual 25 April Li River Protection Day. The NPC record of Guangxi's protection work names the 2012 Lijiang River Basin ecological protection regulations and a Yangshuo County decision on fishing and hunting bans. Those are protection rules, not a cruise timetable.
A coach that sells "the Li River" as a morning cruise plus a photo stop is selling a product. Walk a bank, or sit on a street that already faces the towers. A small boat or raft is a transfer if you have already chosen one stretch, not the whole day. We do not quote cruise prices or pier names here, because they change.
What culture can you find in Guilin city?
In Guilin city the living culture is a bowl of Guilin rice noodles, a nationally listed craft since 2021, and Gui opera, a Guangxi local opera on the national list since 2006, if a performance is on. Lingqu, a Qin-era canal north of the city, is an extra day if you already have nights.
The China Intangible Cultural Heritage Digital Museum records Guilin rice-noodle making (Guilin mifen) as national item VIII-277, in the 2021 fifth batch, declared by Guilin, with the Guilin Drama Creation Research Institute (Guilin ICH Protection and Inheritance Centre) as the protection unit; the State Council published that batch, and the Guangxi Culture and Tourism Department says the same. You walk into a shop, order a bowl and pay by QR code. You do not need a noodle tour.
Guiju (Gui opera) is older on the list: the ICH Digital Museum records it as national item IV-37 (2006, first batch), a Guangxi local opera popular around Guilin, Liuzhou and Hezhou, with the Guangxi Drama Theatre as its protection unit. Guilin's culture bureau describes the municipal ICH centre and its "Guilin Has Opera" evenings. Go if a bill is posted; skip any "show plus river" combo.
Lingqu in Xing'an is a Qin canal that still links the Xiang and Li waters. NCHA's tentative-list update named it under Guangxi, and Guangxi Water Resources records its 2018 world irrigation-heritage listing. The Guangxi government's ninth provincial list (2023) adds more Guilin crafts, such as Guilin stone painting, if you want a second room.
Should you stay in Yangshuo or Guilin city?
Stay in Guilin city if you want the noodles, the opera and the municipal evenings on the same streets; stay in Yangshuo if you want the Li River banks, West Street and the Yulong River on the same nights. With enough time, give each its own nights rather than squeezing Yangshuo in as the last pier of a cruise.
Yangshuo is a county town on the Li River, downstream of Guilin city, with the Yangshuo County Government at 1 Xianqian Street and the Guilin Lijiang River Scenic Area Administration running the scenic river. Three places carry most of its days:
- West Street (Xi Jie) is the town street. Walk it and eat; leave when the neon starts selling the mountain back to you. We do not rank bars or quote menu prices.
- The Yulong River is Yangshuo's own quieter water, not a substitute ticket for the main-stem cruise. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism named the Guangxi Guilin Yangshuo Yulong River Tourist Resort a national tourist resort in 2019, and Guilin municipal reporting treats both the Li River scenic area and the Yulong area as Yangshuo's own ground. Walk a lane and sit by the water; a raft is a transfer, and a packaged "small Li River" loop is still a product.
- Xingping is a river town in the north of the county, not a second cruise terminal. Stay there if you have already chosen that stretch.
If you have the time, split the nights: Guilin city for the bowl and the opera, then Yangshuo for the banks and the Yulong. A day-trip sandwich that treats Yangshuo as the last pier of a morning cruise leaves no time for either.

Yunnan is a neighbouring culture region with its own week, on Yunnan China 2026; Huangshan is granite steps and cloud, on Huangshan hiking and photography 2026. Do not stack them onto Guilin because a brochure used the word landscape twice.
