The short version

A Hong Kong–Guangzhou–Guilin plan for about 10 days: West Kowloon high-speed rail into Guangzhou South, onward rail to Guilin, Yangshuo as a linked extension, and how LocalKey builds the trip.

To see Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Guilin in about 10 days, fly into Hong Kong SAR, take high-speed rail from West Kowloon to Guangzhou South, then continue by high-speed rail to Guilin, with Yangshuo as an optional countryside extension. Per-city nights are set with a LocalKey specialist, and a 240-hour transit plan counts only your mainland days.

Short answer

As of 30 September 2026, fly into Hong Kong SAR, cross from West Kowloon by high-speed rail to Guangzhou South (Guangzhounan), then continue by high-speed rail toward Guilin. Search Guilinbei, Guilinxi or Guilin on 12306 for your date.

Yangshuo is a linked countryside extension via the Guilin–Yangshuo private tour sample. About 10 days is a common frame, but the per-city nights are set with a specialist:

Check the MTR destinations page, the Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China entry guide, and the 240-hour visa-free China guide before fixing the route.

The route sits within the Greater Bay Area, the cluster of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Foshan. This itinerary uses Hong Kong SAR and Guangzhou as its bridge into Guangxi, then continues to Guilin and possibly Yangshuo. Macau is not on this route. See the Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Guilin city guides, the generic 10-day China itinerary, and the longer Hong Kong–Beijing open-jaw.

What is the best route from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and Guilin?

The standard route is West Kowloon to Guangzhou South (Guangzhounan) by high-speed rail, then Guangzhounan to Guilin North (Guilinbei), Guilin West (Guilinxi) or Guilin, booked on 12306. A one-seat West Kowloon to Guilinxi train is the alternative if you do not want Guangzhou nights.

Route skeleton

Block Base How you get there Published LocalKey sample to build from Days in this 10-day frame
Arrive Hong Kong SAR International flight into Hong Kong None yet (city guide)
Cross Guangzhou High-speed rail from West Kowloon to Guangzhou South (Guangzhounan) Guangzhou–Guilin sample, Guangzhou days 1–2
Onward Guilin High-speed rail from the Guangzhou area; search Guangzhounan to Guilinbei, Guilinxi or Guilin on 12306 Guangzhou–Guilin sample, Guilin days 4–6
Optional countryside Yangshuo Road or river corridor from Guilin, as arranged Guilin–Yangshuo sample, Yangshuo days 2–5
Depart Guilin area or return south International flight from Guilin or Guangzhou, or rail back toward Hong Kong — —

The published samples are building blocks, not a locked ten-day schedule. Guangzhou–Guilin is six days (Guangzhou 1–2, rail 3, Guilin 4–6); Guilin–Yangshuo is five (Guilin 1, Yangshuo 2–5). With Hong Kong nights and transfers, they overrun a 10-day Hong Kong-start frame, so the consultant team trims them — without inventing the trimmed split here.

Leg Stations to search Where to check Notes
Hong Kong → Guangzhou West Kowloon → Guangzhou South (Guangzhounan) MTR destinations and MTR/12306 ticketing Listed short-haul mainland destination from West Kowloon
Guangzhou → Guilin Guangzhounan → Guilin North (Guilinbei), Guilin West (Guilinxi) or Guilin 12306 English site Pick the exact train and station for your date; Guilinxi appears on MTR’s long-haul destination list from West Kowloon
One-seat alternative West Kowloon → Guilin West (Guilinxi) MTR destinations and 12306 Skips a Guangzhou hotel base; only if you do not want Guangzhou nights

MTR publishes Hong Kong connections with 114 mainland stations on its destinations page. Use the official 12306 English site and LocalKey’s guide to 12306 train tickets for foreign travellers to check availability and identity requirements. Station names matter, and the correct option depends on your final transfer plan.

How do you cross from Hong Kong to mainland China on this route?

Cross at West Kowloon by high-speed rail: Hong Kong and mainland immigration are both completed inside the station before boarding, and real-name and ticket checks close 30 minutes before departure. West Kowloon Station Port is a 240-hour entry port.

  1. Check entry tools before booking. Hong Kong SAR visit rules and mainland entry rules are separate — review the Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China entry guide. If using 240-hour visa-free transit, count mainland days only; the clock starts at 00:00 the day after mainland entry. Guangdong and Guilin (named on the Guangxi list) sit inside the stay areas under the NIA December 2024 stay-area notice. Longer mainland stays need a visa or the 30-day unilateral visa waiver where your passport qualifies. Link the 240-hour guide for the full rule.

  2. Book the international arrival into Hong Kong. Decide whether the trip ends in Guilin, Guangzhou or with rail back toward Hong Kong. The specialist coordinates the practical sequence around flight availability and your preferred departure city. Exit choice:

  3. Plan the Hong Kong portion. LocalKey arranges the Hong Kong hotel, arrival transfer and any guide days directly as part of the same trip. Number of nights:

  4. Cross at West Kowloon. Follow the MTR departure process. Use the same passport as on the booking. Procedures can start up to 90 minutes before departure and usually take 30–45 minutes; passport holders should allow extra time. Real-name and ticket checks close 30 minutes before departure. Both Hong Kong and mainland immigration are completed inside West Kowloon before boarding. West Kowloon Station Port is a 240-hour entry port; see the G1 crossings guide.

  5. Use Guangzhou as a soft landing. Build from the Guangzhou days in the Guangzhou–Guilin sample. Book onward rail through 12306. Foreign passports recognised by the PRC can use the English site or app after identity verification, according to MTR’s 12306 guidance. Search station names carefully: Guilinbei, Guilinxi and Guilin are different stations.

  6. Continue to Guilin and, if suitable, Yangshuo. Use the Guilin days from the Guangzhou–Guilin sample and/or the Guilin–Yangshuo sample. The Yangshuo transfer is arranged as part of that sample route; do not assume a boat schedule.

What mistakes should you avoid on a Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Guilin trip?

The main mistakes are crossing at Luohu or another Shenzhen land port on a 240-hour plan, assuming a 10-day trip automatically fits inside 240 hours, and booking the wrong Guilin station. From Hong Kong by land, only West Kowloon Station Port and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port are 240-hour options.

Crossing at Lo Wu or another Shenzhen land port on a 240-hour plan

For land arrivals from Hong Kong, the 240-hour options are West Kowloon Station Port and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port only. Luohu, Futian, Huanggang, Shenzhen Bay and Gongbei are not 240-hour entry ports under the relevant policy. Check the G1 crossings guide before selecting a crossing.

Treating “10 days” as automatically inside 240 hours

The window covers 10 days of mainland stay. Hong Kong nights do not consume the mainland clock, but a long mainland portion can still overrun the permitted period. Confirm the exact entry date, exit date and applicable entry tool through the G2 visa and re-entry guide and the 240-hour guide.

Booking the wrong Guilin station

Guilinbei, Guilinxi and Guilin are not interchangeable for the last-mile transfer. Check the exact train and station on 12306, then coordinate the onward car or road transfer around that station.

Adding every sample at full length

The full six-day Guangzhou–Guilin sample plus the full five-day Guilin–Yangshuo sample, followed by Hong Kong nights, cannot simply be placed inside “10 days.” The consultant team must trim the sequence. This article does not invent the cut.

Skipping Guangzhou unintentionally

If you wanted Cantonese food and a soft landing, keep a Guangzhou base in the plan. If you prefer to move directly toward karst country, the one-seat West Kowloon to Guilinxi option exists for consideration.

Separate immigration jurisdictions within China

Moving from Hong Kong SAR to mainland China means clearing both sides of the boundary. Hong Kong SAR is not a country; allow time for the required departure and arrival procedures.

FAQ

How do I get from Hong Kong to Guilin?

The usual route is high-speed rail from West Kowloon to Guangzhou South, followed by onward rail from Guangzhounan to Guilinbei, Guilinxi or Guilin. A one-seat West Kowloon to Guilinxi option can also be checked on MTR and 12306.

Should I stop in Guangzhou?

Stop in Guangzhou if you want Cantonese food, city time and a softer transition into mainland China. Travellers who prefer to reach Guilin directly can consider the one-seat West Kowloon to Guilinxi option.

Can I use 240-hour visa-free transit for this route?

Eligibility depends on your passport, itinerary, entry port and onward travel. Guangdong and Guilin are within the relevant stay areas, but you should confirm the current rules and dates through the LocalKey 240-hour guide and official NIA information.

Which Guilin station should I book?

Search Guilinbei, Guilinxi and Guilin separately on 12306. They are different stations, so the best choice depends on your train and the road transfer planned for your Guilin or Yangshuo stay.

How many days should I spend in Hong Kong?

The consultant team sets the Hong Kong nights after reviewing your arrival, crossing, Guangzhou or direct-to-Guilin preference, Yangshuo plans and departure city.

Should I choose Independent or Private Guided?

Independent includes booked hotels and trains, an app roadbook and 7×24 backup, with optional arranged support. Private Guided adds private guides and a driver with car across the trip, including Hong Kong and the West Kowloon transfer if wanted.
