The short version

How visitors pay in Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR: Tourist Octopus options, why AlipayHK and WeChat Pay HK need a Hong Kong mobile number, Macau Pass basics, and how these differ from mainland Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Updated 30 September 2026 · LocalKey consultant team

Most overseas visitors pay in Hong Kong with contactless cards, cash, and Octopus; AlipayHK and WeChat Pay HK are separate Hong Kong wallets that officially require a Hong Kong mobile number to register — they are not the same as mainland Alipay or WeChat Pay. Daily spending across Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR requires selecting the appropriate tool for each counter rather than expecting a single app to cover every transaction across regional borders.

Which Octopus should a visitor get in Hong Kong?

Visitors staying primarily in Hong Kong SAR should choose either an Octopus on iPhone or Apple Watch through the Octopus App for Tourists or a physical Tourist Octopus (Sold) card. While physical sold cards require no deposit, mobile cards provisioned via Apple Wallet carry a refundable deposit; both avoid standard rental counter queues and support direct top-ups using non-Hong Kong payment cards or physical cash.

Accepted on MTR trains, buses, trams, ferries, and convenience stores, the best Octopus option depends on your device and onward route.

  • Octopus on iPhone / Apple Watch: iPhone X or later and Apple Watch Series 3 or later users can download the Octopus App for Tourists to add a card directly to Apple Wallet. The mobile card requires a refundable deposit alongside initial stored HKD credit, as outlined on the official Octopus on iPhone and Apple Watch page. Top up stored value using a non-Hong Kong issued Mastercard, UnionPay, or Visa card, or via the e-CNY App or Weixin Pay per official usage rules. A handling fee may apply on early refund when returning remaining funds to your payment card under rules on the Octopus leaving Hong Kong page. Express Transit mode taps turnstiles without waking the device.
  • Tourist Octopus (Sold): This physical keepsake card comes in Adult and Child editions with no deposit. It is sold without initial stored value, requiring a top-up before first use. Remaining value is refundable at MTR Customer Service Centres upon card deactivation. Cash reloads are available across convenience stores and transport desks. Android users with mainland accounts can also reload via the Octopus Reloading Weixin Mini Program with a mainland wallet.
  • Huawei Wallet Octopus: Visitors whose Huawei Account registered region is Chinese Mainland, Macao, or Singapore can provision a card via Huawei Pay using the Octopus App for Tourists on AppGallery, topping up with UnionPay.
  • Tourist Octopus – China T-Union Card: This sold card requires no deposit and operates as a standard Octopus in Hong Kong, while also covering public transport across 336 cities in the Chinese Mainland and Macao displaying the China T-Union logo. It is sold without initial stored value and must be topped up before first use. Fares deduct from stored HKD value via automated foreign exchange. Reloading the card renews its internal exchange rate validity period. It does not cover mainland retail, dining, or ride-hailing.
  • Standard On-Loan Octopus: Rented at MTR Customer Service Centres with a refundable deposit and initial stored value. Handling fees may apply for early returns, high remaining balances, or low usage under official Octopus leaving Hong Kong refund rules. Standard cards do not support cross-boundary transit.
Product Best for Cross-boundary transit Acquisition
Octopus on iPhone / Apple Watch Apple users seeking instant digital setup (refundable deposit) Hong Kong only; no mainland or Macau transit Download Octopus App for Tourists to Apple Wallet
Tourist Octopus (Sold) Physical keepsake card with no deposit Hong Kong only Buy at airport, MTR, or convenience stores
Tourist Octopus – China T-Union Card Multi-city transit across HK, Macau, mainland (no deposit) Public transport in 336 mainland cities and Macao Buy at designated transit outlets
On-Loan Octopus Extended stays retaining rental card (refundable deposit) Hong Kong only; return handling fees apply Rent at MTR Customer Service Centres

Regular Tourist Octopus cards are strictly intended for Hong Kong transport and retail use; do not expect them to function on transit networks in Macau or the mainland. Card purchase terms, deposits, and service fees should be verified on the official Octopus choices guide and Octopus leaving Hong Kong page.

Can foreigners register AlipayHK or WeChat Pay HK?

Foreign visitors can only register AlipayHK or WeChat Pay HK if they hold an active Hong Kong mobile phone number capable of receiving SMS verification codes. Without a local Hong Kong mobile number, short-stay international travellers cannot create these accounts and should rely on contactless cards, physical or digital Octopus, and cash within Hong Kong SAR.

Both operate under Hong Kong financial regulations as distinct services from mainland payment apps, using separate technical infrastructure, settling in HKD, and enforcing independent onboarding rules.

  • AlipayHK registration: Sign-up requires an active Hong Kong mobile number for SMS verification; overseas phone numbers cannot complete initial registration. Identity document upload is not required at basic sign-up, but completing identity verification (KYC) unlocks higher spending limits and mainland cross-border spending per the AlipayHK cross-border payment guide. The same guide notes that Transport Code also requires HKID scan and selfie verification — a passport-only KYC path may not unlock metro Transport Code. Accounts can be funded via local bank accounts, FPS, or linked cards. Eligible credit cards issued outside Hong Kong (such as Visa and Mastercard) may be linkable in-app per official terms, subject to issuer clearing and transaction limits. Once identity verification is completed, users can present payment codes at participating mainland merchants displaying the Alipay or Alipay+ logo, settling in HKD as shown in-app.
  • WeChat Pay HK registration: Accessing the HKD wallet inside WeChat requires an account registered with a Hong Kong mobile phone number. Users access the wallet under Me, then Payments & Services, as outlined on the official WeChat Pay HK portal. It supports HKD balance top-ups, local bank connections, and linked payment cards. The wallet is accepted at designated merchants across Hong Kong, Macau, the Chinese Mainland, and Japan where the brand mark is shown, deducting in HKD.

For short-stay visitors without a Hong Kong mobile number, do not plan on using AlipayHK or WeChat Pay HK. Contactless bank cards, Octopus, and cash cover Hong Kong expenses. For mainland journeys, configure mainland Alipay and WeChat Pay accounts.

How do you pay in Macau without a local wallet?

In Macau SAR, visitors pay efficiently by using contactless credit or debit cards, physical cash, or a physical Macau Pass card. The local mobile payment application, MPay, is designed around regional telephone numbers and identity verification tiers, making physical cards and cash the standard tools for foreign travellers.

Macau SAR maintains an independent currency and distinct payment practices. While digital payments are widespread among residents, international travellers manage daily transit, dining, and shopping without opening a local mobile wallet.

  • Macau Pass and MPay: Macau Pass is the primary contactless payment card used across Macau public transport and retail shops. Its companion app, MPay, functions as a local digital wallet requiring a mobile phone number for sign-up. The highest account tier requires recognized identity documents. Foreign tourists should confirm registration eligibility in the app; for short stays, registering MPay is rarely practical. Travellers planning frequent bus journeys can buy a physical Macau Pass card at convenience stores and transport desks, providing exact fare payment without handling loose coins.
  • Currency practices (MOP, HKD and RMB): Both the Macau Pataca (MOP) and the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) circulate in Macau commerce. HKD is often accepted commercially in Macau (shops/taxis) but is not Macau legal tender; change is often returned in MOP; merchants set terms. Mainland RMB is also accepted at many retail counters under merchant-determined terms. Major hotels, restaurants, ferry ticket offices, and transport operators accept international Visa, Mastercard, and UnionPay cards. Certain retail merchants also display WeChat Pay HK acceptance signs.

Do Hong Kong wallets and Octopus work on the mainland?

Standard Hong Kong Octopus cards and unregistered Hong Kong mobile wallets do not function in mainland China. Cross-boundary transit requires the Tourist Octopus – China T-Union Card, while Hong Kong mobile wallets support mainland retail transactions only under specific registration and verification rules.

Crossing into the mainland means moving between two distinct payment environments:

  • China T-Union Octopus: The Tourist Octopus – China T-Union Card works on public transport turnstiles and bus fareboxes in 336 cities in the Chinese Mainland and Macao displaying the China T-Union logo. It deducts fares from stored HKD balance using automated currency conversion. Reloading the card updates the internal exchange rate validity period. Crucially, it does not work for mainland retail purchases, restaurant dining, or ride-hailing services. Regular Tourist Octopus and standard On-Loan Octopus cards lack China T-Union integration and will not work on mainland transit.
  • AlipayHK and WeChat Pay HK cross-border use: For general retail and dining across the mainland, AlipayHK can be used after completing identity verification (KYC), enabling users to present their Payment Code at participating mainland merchants displaying the Alipay or Alipay+ logo, settling transactions in HKD as detailed in the AlipayHK cross-border payment guide. Similarly, WeChat Pay HK accounts registered with a Hong Kong mobile number are accepted across Chinese Mainland, Macau, and Japan where merchants display the brand mark, deducting in HKD per official WeChat Pay HK terms. Neither platform requires local Hong Kong permanent residency, but both require a Hong Kong mobile number to set up.
  • Mainland Alipay and WeChat Pay: International visitors often assume mobile payment apps work identically across the border. Mainland Alipay and mainland WeChat Pay are entirely separate platforms denominated in RMB, designed for transactions across mainland China. Unlike Hong Kong regional wallets, mainland Alipay and WeChat Pay allow international visitors to register with overseas mobile phone numbers and link foreign-issued Visa or Mastercard credit cards. However, mainland wallets do not replace Octopus for general public transport or small street retail in Hong Kong SAR.

Before crossing the border, configure mainland tools using our guides:

What should you set up before a Hong Kong–Macau–mainland trip?

Before travelling, visitors should set up mainland Alipay and WeChat Pay on their home phone number and provision a digital Octopus to Apple Wallet if using an eligible iPhone or Apple Watch. Attempting to register regional Hong Kong or Macau mobile wallets before departure is unnecessary and will fail without a Hong Kong mobile phone number, while advanced wallet tiers require further identity verification.

Preparing your payment stack in advance ensures smooth transit across all three jurisdictions:

  1. Digital Octopus (Apple users): Download the Octopus App for Tourists, add a card to Apple Wallet with a refundable deposit, and fund it with an international Visa or Mastercard.
  2. Physical card (Android / other users): Purchase a Tourist Octopus or Tourist China T-Union card upon arrival at Hong Kong International Airport or major transit stations, adding initial value with cash.
  3. Mainland wallets: For mainland RMB QR payments, follow LocalKey's dedicated setups in How First-Time Visitors Should Set Up Alipay and WeChat Pay and Alipay for Foreigners 2026: Link a Visa or Mastercard Before You Fly before your departure.
  4. Bank notifications: Inform card issuers of your travel dates to prevent fraud blocks.
  5. SMS roaming: Confirm your mobile plan receives incoming verification SMS abroad for bank authorization prompts.

Common mistakes and edge cases

  • Confusing regional and mainland wallets: Downloading AlipayHK or WeChat Pay HK without a Hong Kong mobile number results in failed SMS verification. Use mainland Alipay and WeChat Pay for mainland journeys.
  • Expecting standard Octopus to cover Macau or Shenzhen transit: Standard Tourist Octopus cards function only in Hong Kong. Cross-boundary transit requires the Tourist Octopus – China T-Union edition and transport readers showing the China T-Union logo.
  • Letting T-Union exchange rates lapse: The China T-Union card relies on periodically updated exchange rate schedules. Reload the card at a designated Octopus add-value point (or update via the Octopus App where available) so the rate on the card is current before mainland or Macao transit use.
  • Assuming Hong Kong is cashless: While mainland China is predominantly QR-driven, Hong Kong relies on physical cards and cash. Many urban taxis and neighbourhood eateries still favour cash or Octopus (physical or mobile) rather than QR wallets cards.
  • Planning border transit logistics: After organizing payment tools, review our regional transit guide on Hong Kong to Mainland China Crossings to select appropriate ports, high-speed rail connections, or ferry routes.
