What the land actually is
UNESCO lists the wider property as Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas (WHC list 1083), inscribed in 2003 as a natural serial site. The brief names eight clusters in north-west Yunnan, 1.7 million hectares, and the upper Yangtze (Jinsha), Mekong, and Salween running through steep gorges that, in places, are 3,000 m deep, with glaciated peaks above 6,000 m. Criterion (vii) names the Jinsha gorges as the dominant scenic element and names Haba Snow Mountain on the skyline. The coordinating body named there is the Yunnan Three Parallel Rivers Management Bureau, with offices in Diqing, Nujiang, and Lijiang.
Tiger Leaping Gorge is the Jinsha cut between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong) and Haba. It is not Huangshan granite steps. That ridge lives on Huangshan hiking and photography 2026. It is not Zhangjiajie's quartz pillar forest. That landform lives on Zhangjiajie photography 2026. Do not paste a Yellow Mountain dawn or an Avatar plateau onto this river.
A Yunnan provincial outdoor-route note from the Sports Bureau describes the high trail as a path along the Haba flank from Shangri-La Hutiaoxia Town to the middle gorge, about 23 km, with village guesthouses on the way: tyj.yn.gov.cn, 27 Oct 2023. A Yunnan publicity note on the Lijiang-bank scenic area records about 23 km of gorge, Yulong at 5,596 m, Haba at 5,396 m, river surface about 1,769 m, and a narrowest water gap of about 20 m, plus the leaping-tiger stone in the current: ynxc.gov.cn, 26 Jan 2025. I will not invent a 2026 gate price or opening hour. Confirm the morning you go. The Lijiang-side ticket walk and the high trail are not the same day.
Hutiaoxia Town sits on the Shangri-La bank. The town government publishes on the Shangri-La city site (xianggelila.gov.cn). Qiaotou is the usual English name for that start.
High trail one night, river walk another day
Pick one landform. Keep the edges of the day. Do not add twelve famous names. A group day tries to stack the upper-gorge statue, a high-trail hour, and Lijiang Old Town. Hiking and that stack fight each other.
Sleep in Lijiang if you only have a river-walk afternoon. Sleep on the high trail if the gorge is the walk. A private car is useful from Lijiang to Qiaotou. Inside the trail, your feet still win. Guesthouses on the path are the bed, not a hotel in the old town.

After rain, the path is mud and loose stone. In hard sun, the same walls read as grey rock. A tripod on a narrow ledge blocks the path; leave it in the bag if a mule train is already using the line. Check the day's notice for closed sections. I will not invent a 2026 drone permit.
Naxi farmhouses and guesthouses on the trail are a living place, not a costume hour between two viewpoints. Tea belongs in a Lijiang courtyard on another day, not on the climb. Lijiang Old Town is a separate UNESCO cultural site. It is not the gorge. Give it its own afternoon after you come down, or before you start.
Lijiang as the coming city, and the 240-hour check
The useful base is Lijiang. Lijiang is the coming city on our Destinations index. The gorge is the walk. Book the long hop on official 12306, with the same passport you carry to the trail.
