The short version

A practical guide to visiting Zhangjiajie and the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, covering how many days to plan, what to book and how it fits a China trip.

Updated 11 October 2026 · LocalKey consultant team

We suggest giving Zhangjiajie two to three days for the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site of more than 3,000 quartz sandstone pillars in Hunan; book your park entry through an official reservation channel before you go, and bring the original passport used for the booking.

How many days do you need in Zhangjiajie?

We suggest two park days for a first visit, or three park days if you want a slower pace; plan an arrival evening that is not a park day.

On a two-park-day plan, we usually spend one full day among the pillars and a second day on a different area with a slower morning. On a three-park-day plan, we suggest keeping the third day lighter. Stay nights depend on when you arrive: an evening arrival plus two park days is typically three nights in town.

What is Wulingyuan?

The Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992. UNESCO describes its landscape as a set of narrow quartz sandstone pillars, many of them over 200 metres high, with ravines, gorges, streams, pools, waterfalls, natural bridges and caves.

The table below summarises the key points from the UNESCO listing.

Feature What UNESCO says Source
Pillars More than 3,000 narrow quartz sandstone pillars, many over 200m high UNESCO World Heritage Centre
Water and rock features Ravines, gorges, streams, pools, waterfalls, natural bridges and caves UNESCO World Heritage Centre
Location Hunan Province, China UNESCO World Heritage Centre

For planning, the listing tells you what kind of place this is: a landscape of rock and water rather than a single viewpoint. With so many pillars, ravines and waterfalls, one day cannot cover it all, which is one reason we suggest two to three days.

The names can be confusing. In this article we use Zhangjiajie for the city and the wider destination, and Wulingyuan for the protected area named in the UNESCO listing. When you book, check that the entry you reserve matches the area you plan to visit.

What should you book before you visit?

We suggest booking your park entry through an official reservation channel before you travel, rather than arriving without a plan. Check current opening hours and entry rules on that channel close to your travel date, because the details can change.

We suggest bringing the original passport that you used for the booking, and confirming the ID rule on the official reservation channel.

Costs and cable car rules are not covered in this article, so please confirm them directly on the official channel. Our consultants can help you check the current details before you go.

A short checklist we share with travellers:

  • Reserve your park entry through an official reservation channel before you travel.
  • Check opening hours and entry rules on that channel close to your travel date.
  • Bring the original passport used for the booking (confirm on the official channel).
  • Confirm cable car rules and costs on the official channel rather than from memory or a forum post.
  • Send your booking dates to your specialist so the rest of the route matches.

Booking first means you plan your days around your entry rather than the other way round. If your plans change, tell your specialist early so we can adjust hotels, transfers and the rest of the route with you.

How does Zhangjiajie fit a China trip?

Zhangjiajie is in Hunan Province, and the National Immigration Administration lists Hunan among the 24 provincial-level areas permitted for 240-hour visa-free transit. Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport is also listed among the open ports for visa-free transit.

For the full policy, read our 240-hour visa-free transit explainer. Eligible travellers can include Zhangjiajie in an up-to-10-day stay under this policy. See our Zhangjiajie destination page for how the city sits in a wider route. We suggest pairing Zhangjiajie with a city you already plan to fly through, rather than treating it as a same-day add-on, because the park days are worth a dedicated stay.

A simple way to build the route is to decide your total days first, set aside two to three for Zhangjiajie, and place your other cities around them. Eligibility depends on your nationality and route, so we suggest asking a specialist to check before you book anything.

LocalKey can arrange a trip that includes Zhangjiajie as part of a wider itinerary, and we can check whether the 240-hour transit policy applies to your route and nationality. For how the Avatar-related landscapes are discussed, read our Avatar inspiration article and our photography guide.

LocalKey can plan your Zhangjiajie days in two ways. The first is Independent, where you travel on your own with the LocalKey app and 24/7 backup. There is no full-time guide on any day, and a local guide, airport pickup or a private car and driver are optional add-ons on demand. The second is Private Guided, which includes an English-speaking private guide and a private car throughout the trip.

Independent suits travellers who like to set their own pace and are comfortable moving between sites with app support. Private Guided suits travellers who want a guide and a car alongside them from start to finish.

Both options are part of private China tours: Independent and Private Guided.

Your own China trip — planned, booked and backed by LocalKey — is built around your dates, your pace and your interests. Talk to a 1:1 specialist, available 7×24 on WeChat or WhatsApp, to start planning your Zhangjiajie visit.
