Short answer
As of 29 September 2026, an open-jaw ticket into Hong Kong SAR and home from Beijing avoids doubling back. The route skeleton is Hong Kong SAR → Guangzhou or Shenzhen → one onward stop, such as Guilin, Chengdu or Xi'an → Beijing. West Kowloon high-speed rail links the pieces; see the MTR destinations page. A full 14 days on the mainland is longer than the 240-hour window, so check the Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China entry guide and the 240-hour visa-free China guide before booking.
This route begins in the Greater Bay Area, the cluster of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Foshan, then moves north through mainland China. Use the Hong Kong guide, Guangzhou guide and Beijing guide for city context. Macau is not on this route, although it can be discussed as an optional add-on with a specialist. For the broader planning question, see LocalKey's 14-day China itinerary guide.

The consultant team uses a depth rule from the LocalKey 14-day page: prefer three hotel bases across two weeks, with a hard cap around four. The published segment samples below are longer than the room a 14-day open-jaw leaves, so the consultant team trims them to fit. This article does not invent those trimmed numbers.
Rail legs from Hong Kong West Kowloon (official MTR timetable)
These are examples from MTR's long-haul timetable for trains departing from 11 October 2026. Times vary with stops and can change.
| Leg | Example direct train | Approx. journey time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| West Kowloon → Shenzhen North (Shenzhenbei) | G382 | About 20 minutes | MTR long-haul timetable |
| West Kowloon → Guangzhou South (Guangzhounan) | G382 | About 50 minutes | MTR long-haul timetable |
| West Kowloon → Guilin West (Guilinxi) | G918 or G906 | About 3 hours 10–15 minutes | MTR long-haul timetable |
| West Kowloon → Chengdu East (Chengdudong) | G918 | About 8 hours 20 minutes | MTR long-haul timetable |
| West Kowloon → Xi'an North (Xianbei) | G914/5 | About 11 hours | MTR long-haul timetable |
| West Kowloon → Beijing West (Beijingxi) | G382 | About 8 hours 10 minutes | MTR long-haul timetable |
MTR says the network links Hong Kong with 114 Mainland stations, with first and last trains from West Kowloon around 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., and around 25 pairs of long-haul trains a day, as published for 27 September 2026. Mainland legs such as Guangzhou–Guilin, Guilin–Xi'an or Chengdu, Xi'an–Beijing and Chengdu–Beijing are not quoted here. Check the day's timetable on 12306 and read LocalKey's guide to 12306 train tickets for foreigners.
The one-seat alternative is the direct West Kowloon → Beijing West train, about 8 hours 10 minutes on that timetable. It suits travellers who want Hong Kong plus Beijing and skips the middle of the route.
2. Step by step
-
Check entry tools before booking. Hong Kong SAR visit rules and mainland entry are separate decisions, so read the visa, re-entry and third-country-or-region guide. If using 240-hour visa-free transit, count mainland days only: the clock starts at 00:00 the day after you enter the mainland. Stay within the permitted areas. Guangdong, Guilin (named on the Guangxi list), Sichuan, Shaanxi and Beijing are inside them under the NIA December 2024 stay-area notice. See the 240-hour guide for the full rule. A mainland stay longer than 240 hours needs a visa or the 30-day unilateral waiver where your passport qualifies. Do not treat this route as eligible until the entry tool and dates are checked.
-
Book the open-jaw international ticket. Fly into Hong Kong, then plan to fly home from Beijing Capital (PEK) or Beijing Daxing (PKX).
-
Plan the Hong Kong stay. LocalKey arranges the Hong Kong hotel, arrival transfer and any guide days directly as part of the same trip. Number of nights:
-
Cross at West Kowloon. Follow the MTR departure process. Use the same passport you booked with. Procedures can start up to 90 minutes before departure and usually take 30–45 minutes, but passport holders should allow extra time. Real-name and ticket checks close 30 minutes before departure. You complete both Hong Kong and mainland immigration inside West Kowloon before boarding. West Kowloon Station Port is a 240-hour entry port; see Hong Kong to mainland China crossings for why this crossing fits the route better than the Shenzhen land crossings.
-
Choose one mainland corridor. Use Guangzhou or Shenzhen as the first mainland base, then select one onward stop: Guilin for karst and river days, Chengdu for pandas and teahouses, or Xi'an for the Terracotta Army. Keep to one onward stop under the depth rule. Book mainland rail on 12306. Foreign passports recognised by the PRC can use the English site or app after identity verification, according to MTR's 12306 information page.
-
Continue into Beijing and depart. Travel into Beijing by rail or domestic flight, finish near your departure airport, and fly home. For a 240-hour entry, your onward ticket from Beijing is the one that matters: it must be to a third country or region with a confirmed seat and date.
3. Mistakes and edge cases
Crossing at Lo Wu or another Shenzhen land port on a 240-hour plan
For land entry from Hong Kong, the listed 240-hour options are West Kowloon Station Port and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port only. Luohu, Futian, Huanggang, Shenzhen Bay and Gongbei are not 240-hour entry ports, as checked 27 September 2026. Compare the options in Hong Kong to mainland China crossings before choosing one.
Treating 14 days as 240 hours
The window is 10 days of mainland stay. Keep the mainland portion inside it, or use a visa or eligible 30-day waiver. Arriving from Hong Kong SAR and flying on from Beijing to a different country is the usual shape for a transit entry. Hong Kong SAR is commonly treated as a separate region under the "third country or region" wording, but no official page states it outright, so confirm your exact routing with your airline or the port. Read Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China visas and re-entry for the decision points.
Too many bases
Stacking Guilin, Chengdu and Xi'an turns the trip into packing days. Pick one onward stop and give the consultant team room to shape the route around your interests.
Doubling back to Hong Kong
Returning to Hong Kong to fly home wastes a day. That is the reason the open-jaw pattern works well.
Timetables change
The MTR PDF is a reference for the published examples. Always check the ticketing system, including 12306 or MTR, for your date.
Separate immigration jurisdictions within China
Hong Kong SAR is a separate immigration jurisdiction within China. Moving from Hong Kong to mainland China means clearing both sides, even on a short train ride; at West Kowloon both happen inside the station before you board.
4. Sample routes
These existing LocalKey pages are building blocks, not a locked departure:
- Guangzhou–Guilin private tour: a 6-day sample with Guangzhou days 1–2, rail day 3 and Guilin days 4–6.
- Hong Kong + Guangzhou + Guilin in 10 Days: the shorter Hong Kong-start South China bridge (about 10 days).
- Guilin–Yangshuo private tour: a 5-day sample with Guilin day 1 and Yangshuo days 2–5.
- Xi'an–Beijing private tour: an about 6–7-day sample with Xi'an days 1–3, rail day 4 and Beijing days 5–7.
- Beijing–Chengdu private tour: a 7-day sample with Beijing days 1–3, corridor day 4 and Chengdu days 5–7.
- Shenzhen city guide, Guilin city guide, Chengdu city guide and Xi'an city guide provide destination context.
- Browse culture experiences if that is central to your route.
- Use the generic 14-day China itinerary and the Hong Kong to mainland China crossings guide for related planning.
The consultant team sets the 14-day split. The samples above show how LocalKey builds route sections, not how many nights each city receives in this open-jaw version.

FAQ
Is it better to fly into Hong Kong and out of Beijing?
For this route, yes. The open-jaw ticket avoids returning south after travelling north and lets West Kowloon connect Hong Kong SAR with mainland China by high-speed rail.
How long is the train from Hong Kong to Beijing?
The direct West Kowloon to Beijing West example in MTR's timetable is about 8 hours 10 minutes. Times can change, so check MTR for your departure date.
Can I use 240-hour visa-free transit for this route?
Only if your passport, itinerary, entry port, permitted areas and onward ticket meet the current rules. Fourteen days on the mainland is longer than 240 hours, so the mainland portion must fit the window or you need another eligible entry option.
Which crossing should I use from Hong Kong?
West Kowloon Station Port is the route's high-speed rail crossing and a listed 240-hour entry port. Check Hong Kong to mainland China crossings for the current crossing choice and requirements.
How many days should I spend in Hong Kong?
The consultant team sets the Hong Kong portion around your arrival, interests and mainland entry plan. LocalKey has not published a fixed Hong Kong split for this 14-day open-jaw route.
Should I choose Independent or Private Guided?
Independent includes booked hotels and trains, an app roadbook and 7×24 backup, with optional airport pickup, private car and driver, and local guide services. Private Guided includes private guides and a driver and car across the trip, which can include a Hong Kong guide day and the transfer to West Kowloon.
