Two days in Chongqing covers the essentials: Day 1 for the Three Gorges Museum, the People's Auditorium and Liziba before an evening on the riverside night route, and Day 2 for Ciqikou, Eling Park and the Yangtze River Cableway, with hot pot for dinner. Add a third day for the Dazu Rock Carvings, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or Wulong Karst, part of the South China Karst World Heritage site, or spend it on a slower city day.
This plan is built around central Yuzhong, Shapingba and Nan'an, with metro connections where they help keep the route simple. If you are arriving by train from Chengdu, use our Chengdu to Chongqing high-speed train notes for arrival planning, then begin this itinerary once you are settled. For a wider orientation, see our Chongqing city page.
Is two or three days enough for Chongqing?
Two days are enough for the Three Gorges Museum, the People's Auditorium, Liziba, Ciqikou, Eling Park, the Yangtze River Cableway, a night route and a hot-pot dinner. A third day can be a full-day visit to the Dazu Rock Carvings (a UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 1999) or Wulong Karst (part of the South China Karst World Heritage site), or another city day including Huguang Guild Hall.
| Day | Focus | Main stops | Metro lines used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Museum, civic architecture and monorail | China Three Gorges Museum, People's Auditorium, one nearby walk, Liziba, evening night route (linked) | Line 2 |
| Day 2 | Old town, hilltop park and river crossing | Ciqikou, Eling Park, Yangtze River Cableway, hot pot | Line 1, Line 6 or Loop Line |
| Day 3 option A | UNESCO rock carvings | Dazu Rock Carvings | Confirm transport the day before |
| Day 3 option B | UNESCO karst landscape | Wulong Karst | Confirm transport the day before |
| Day 3 option C | A slower city day | Huguang Guild Hall, second night route | Confirm on the day |
The two-day version has a clear rhythm: history and urban infrastructure on the first day, then old-town lanes, a park and a river crossing on the second. The third-day choices are different in character. Dazu is centred on five clusters of rock carvings, Wulong on giant dolines, natural bridges and caves, while the city option gives you more time for Huguang Guild Hall, photography or a second evening route.
For photographers, the plan puts Liziba in late daylight on Day 1. You can add a photo-led China trip, while the Chongqing cyberpunk photo guide covers equipment and angles. If the city's layered lights and elevated railways are the main reason you are coming, see Chongqing's cyberpunk city character.
What should you do on Day 1 in Chongqing?
Day 1 links the China Three Gorges Museum and the People's Auditorium at People's Square with one nearby walk, then Line 2 from Zengjiayan to Liziba. The evening follows our linked night-views route once the skyline lighting comes on.
Morning
Start at the China Three Gorges Museum, 236 Renmin Road, Yuzhong. Entry is free. The museum is open from 09:00 to 17:00, with no admission after 16:00, and is closed on Mondays except statutory holidays. The free scope includes Magnificent Three Gorges, Ancient Ba-Yu, Chongqing: Journey of the City and the Grand Three Gorges circular-screen film.
Since 1 October 2025, the museum has not required a reservation. Foreign visitors should bring the passport they travel on; there is a security check at the entrance. The museum can post crowd warnings through its WeChat account and Weibo, so check its latest notice before setting out.
Cross People's Square to the People's Auditorium, at 173 Renmin Road. It was built from 1951 to 1954 in a palace style with axial symmetry, and its dome was modelled on the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests at Beijing's Temple of Heaven. Check opening arrangements on the day.
The official Chongqing Rail Transit introduction lists Line 2 as linking the People's Auditorium and Liziba. The line is a monorail running through Zengjiayan and Niujiaotuo before Liziba, which makes it useful for the afternoon route.
Afternoon
Before Line 2, pick one of the nearby options the Chongqing Municipal People's Government suggested alongside the museum: Zhongshan 4th Road, described in that notice as Chongqing's most beautiful street, with wartime sites including Zhou Gongguan and Guiyuan beneath huangge trees; the Zengjiayan cliffside walkway; or the Ma'anshan traditional quarter.
Then board Line 2 at Zengjiayan station and ride via Niujiaotuo to Liziba in late daylight. Liziba is China's first straddle-monorail elevated station built together with a commercial-residential building, with a viewing platform of about 1,367 square metres.
In 2026, allow for works: Liziba station is being upgraded in phases until 30 December 2026, so follow on-site signs and staff instructions. The current closures are listed in the checks section below.
Evening
Chongqing's riverside skyline lighting comes on at 19:30 from October to April and at 20:00 from May to September (Chongqing Municipal People's Government; full times in the checks section). From Liziba, follow our Chongqing night views route for the order of stops, timings and tickets; we do not repeat it here.
What should you do on Day 2 in Chongqing?
Day 2 starts on Line 1 at Ciqikou, continues to Eling Park and Kansheng Tower, then reaches the Yangtze River Cableway from Xiaoshizi to Shangxin Street in Longmenhao. Finish with Chongqing hot pot and use the dedicated Chongqing hot-pot notes for ordering and table guidance.
Morning
Take Line 1 to Ciqikou, in Shapingba District on the Jialing River. It was founded in the Xianping era of the Song dynasty as Baiyan Chang and later renamed Longyin; the porcelain trade of the Qing and Republican eras gave it the name Ciqikou.
Give the old town the morning so the rest of Day 2 is not rushed.
Midday
Take Line 1 back towards Eling for Eling Park. The park is in Yuzhong and takes its name from the ridge's goose-neck shape. It began as the private Li Garden in 1909 and opened to the public as Eling Park in 1958.
The main high point is Kansheng Tower, formerly called the Liangjiang Pavilion. It is a seven-storey tower, 41.44 metres high, overlooking the meeting of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers at Chaotianmen. Check opening arrangements on the day.
Late afternoon
Continue on Line 1 to Xiaoshizi. The north station of the Yangtze River Cableway is nearby on Xinhua Road in Yuzhong. The cableway crosses the Yangtze to Shangxin Street in Longmenhao, Nan'an, over a route of 1,166 metres.
The operator lists normal hours as 08:00 to 22:00. On statutory holidays, the listed hours are 07:30 to 23:00. Cross by cableway, then return via Shangxinjie station on Line 6 or the Loop Line, or return by cableway if the operator's current arrangements suit your plan.
Evening
Make hot pot the evening meal, then keep the night flexible or finish early. The hot-pot article linked above covers what to order and how the meal works.
What can you add on a third day in Chongqing?
A third day can be a full-day trip to the Dazu Rock Carvings, a UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 1999, or to Wulong Karst, part of the South China Karst World Heritage site; or it can be a slower city day at Huguang Guild Hall. Leave early for either day trip, confirm transport the day before, and ask LocalKey to arrange a car and driver if needed. If you have more days and want the Three Gorges from the water, see our Yangtze River cruise from Chongqing page.
Option A: Dazu Rock Carvings
The Dazu Rock Carvings itinerary is the choice for a full day focused on carved hillsides. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1999. It consists of five clusters of rock carvings dating from the 9th to the 13th century on steep hillsides in the Dazu area near Chongqing.
Beishan is the largest cluster. At Baodingshan, the carvings sit in a U-shaped gorge. Plan the day around the site rather than trying to add another major attraction. Confirm transport the day before and leave early.
Option B: Wulong Karst
The Wulong Karst photography plan is for a full day among large natural formations. Wulong Karst is part of the South China Karst World Heritage site, whose Phase I was inscribed in 2007 for its giant dolines, natural bridges and caves.
This option suits travellers who want a landscape day after two urban days. Leave early, plan the entire day for Wulong, and confirm transport the day before; our Wulong day trip from Chongqing covers the trains, the transfer bus and timing. LocalKey can arrange a car and driver for the visit.
Option C: A slower city day
Stay in the city and visit Huguang Guild Hall beside the Yangtze at Dongshuimen in Yuzhong. The Qing-dynasty complex includes Yuwang Palace, Qi'an Guild and Guangdong Guild halls. The Chongqing Local Chronicles Office describes it as China's largest surviving ancient guild-hall complex, and it has been a national key cultural relic protection unit since 2006.
For the evening, use the night views route again and pick the final stop you did not have time for on Day 1. This city option also leaves more space for photography, family pacing or a second look at the museum district.
What should you check before each day in Chongqing?
Check museum notices, station signs, the cableway operator site and lighting times before setting out. The museum closes on Mondays except statutory holidays, Liziba has 2026 works, the cableway has holiday hours, and the skyline lighting changes by season.
If Day 1 falls on a Monday that is not a statutory holiday, swap Day 1 and Day 2 so the museum is not the day's anchor. The museum also posts crowd-limit notices on WeChat and Weibo; on 3 April 2026, the Chongqing Municipal People's Government reported dynamic control and a temporary flow limit at the main entrance after capacity was reached.
For Liziba, parts of the station platform are closed from 16 June to 30 November 2026. Hall A is closed from 1 September and is expected to reopen around 31 October, with passengers using the platform-to-hall stairs meanwhile; the wider project is due to finish on 30 December. Follow signs and staff instructions.
The cableway operator lists holiday hours of 07:30 to 23:00, compared with regular hours of 08:00 to 22:00. Skyline lighting comes on at 19:30 from 1 October to 30 April and stays on until at least 21:30, and comes on at 20:00 from 1 May to 30 September and stays on until at least 22:30. Times and operating arrangements can change, so check the operator site and municipal notices on the day.
For metro payment, use the practical China metro notes for foreign visitors, then follow current station signs and staff instructions.
Planning around pace
Families can use the China family trips page when planning around younger travellers, while older travellers may prefer the slower city option on Day 3.
Plan this with LocalKey
Every LocalKey trip is your own China trip — planned, booked and backed: we plan the route, book everything, and the app guides you day by day, with 24/7 support. We reshape these two or three days around your arrival, pace and interests, whether that is food, history, photography or family travel. See how our private China tours work, then choose the level of support that suits you.
- Independent: you travel on your own with the LocalKey app and 24/7 backup. Airport pickup, a private car and driver, or a local guide can be added on demand, so a guide is an optional add-on. This suits travellers who want to keep the city days flexible and choose Dazu or Wulong the day before, adding a car and driver if needed.
- Private Guided: a private guide plus driver and car across the trip. For this itinerary, that can mean a car for the Dazu or Wulong day, a guide who explains the museum, the auditorium and the guild halls and a pace that suits everyone travelling.
Speak with a 1:1 specialist through 7×24 WeChat/WhatsApp for a version matched to your dates and pace.
